Oh that's sweet. Is the supercharger belt driven between the carb and crankcase?? Any more pics?

Wonder why they didn't go "full tilt boogy" with over head cams?? Pushrods are "old tech....." (But I still love it!)

I got this picture in a club news letter from Birmingham, Al.

Looking at the picture, there appears to be a cog belt on the back side?

Depending on cam locations (between the valves or on top of them) overhead cams would have made the engine even wider. I'm sure width was a consideration in the overall design. The cylinder / valve layout would have to be turned 90 degrees for the OHC to work also. There would have been cam drive considerations .... probably by a timing belt (with idlers or guides as w8ye pointed out) and there would have been a need to cover this. A pushrod layout probably offers acceptable performance and less overall complication.

I wonder how they did the oil system! Overhead cams would have added complications in this area also.

Interesting engine and I'm sure a sign of whats to come in the future. I wonder if the clone will be out before the original hits the market?!

Here's a larger image of those shots from FG showing the cam and super charger drive. Looks like it could use a couple idlers on those belts?

Ha!! If that were me, the engine would ride in the front seat and the "old lady" in the back! Hmmm..... maybe that's why I'm divorced....

Anyway, with the cam and supercharger belt driven like that, it seems like doing over head cams wouldn't have been that big a deal. Maybe even less machine work and parts?

Cool supercharger. Looks like a "Roots" design. Can't wait till someone reviews it. I hope it is one of the reviewers that takes it all apart and shows the goodies inside...

If push rods are mounted on camshaft center line and actuated by lobes, how does this engine work? The push rods are mounted near the top of that box with the "USA" plate. I can't see lobes and lifters being under there. Not enough room.

Amen! I had one of the original Conley 1.20s, an OHC design. It had fixed idlers on the timing belt; thus no automatic tension adjust when the belt stretched. The belt would jump cogs in a heartbeat if a mechanical transient occurred; say a minimal prop strike on soft turf. It was a real PITA to re-time because it required dismounting the engine to get at the belt/pulleys. Maybe jumping a cog isn't as important on a SC belt, though. (?)

I sold the engine to a German collector.

If you look at the size of the pulleys, the cam and lifters are in the USA box.

Interesting to say the least!  Would love to see a review, any idea when?

('Super Charged Twin' would be more accurate, nitpicky I know. I thought I'd get to see twin SC's. )  [X(] Now that would be nice!

It probably won't be long before you see a clone.

wow, I didnt think our newsletter traveled much further outside our club but I guess it did. I was the one who took that first picture. I just got back from Joe Nall a day ago. I tell you what, the cnc machining and finish work on this engine was absolutely gorgeous. It almost didnt even matter not getting to hear it run, I was just loving the way this engine looked and felt. Dont get me wrong, I still would have loved to hear it run.

That was the only picture I took. The ones from FG are probably the best we will get for now.
