1/4 sorta scale Velie Monocoupe.
I have ALWAYS loved this plane,
Possibly because there was a nice stick and tissue kit hanging in a local hobby shop for 20 years or so. It was built by a kid and left for show purposes at the hobby shop.
Ten years ago I started drawing up a set of plans for a Velie Monocoupe utilizing a Sig Seniorita wing I had laying around. Well I got sidetracked and never finished the plans. So when I went to a local RC swap meet this year and spotted a Broken, twisted ,abandoned Velie Monocoupe I jumped on it. It sold for the price of the big wheels on it, I was happy..
The plans with the plane are the blown up Flyline kit, the same kit as the stick and tissue plane I had seen so many times.
The wing was broken in half, and I had a spare Sig Senior wing laying around, it was a freebie from a good friend that passed away a few years ago. His name was Don Mc Kenna, (he was a great guy and flyer). He had a aileron rip out and the plane went in, so, as he knew I am a sucker for a HALF an airplane he gave it to me for some project just like this.
Well after I fixed the aileron and various other damage, I cut the front center section of the wing out to fix permanently on the fuselage..
I can't seem to find all the pictures from before? So I have the pictures with the base coat on, and some airbrushing, I will doing some chalk work before i dust some clear on..
Here is the old stick and tissue kit that had always inspired me !

Here are the pics of the base coated paint.. This is all cheap bottle hobby acrylic paint over the uncertified ceconite I buy from Aircraft Spruce. I use Sig Stix-it to apply the Ceconite. I paint with cheap foam brushes. All of the black lettering is just done with a permanent sharpie. None of it is perfect sticker or transfer , I sort of enjoy doing it fast easy and imperfect by hand. I like the used weathered airplane look more than anything else.I also tend to use chalk to art/dirty up the plane with shade and reflective TRICKS

How about some fast faked in rib tape lines.. I just lay down some 1/4 wide tape and dust it with the airbrush, then remove the tape.

Well its so tight and close up front I have used Turnigy 5055 400 kv motor. They will swing a 16-8 prop pretty well on 6 cells and a 60 amp speed control, so thats the plan. My landing gear and struts that came with the plane are overbuilt and will bring the all up weight close to 12 pounds...
So it won't be a floater... but it should fly scaleish pretty well.. Its all pretty experimental until it makes it off the ground

Monocoupe lovers, check these out. Yes, there is a Velie there too! Lots more where these came from if interested. My all time favorite airplanes.

OK. You have me dreaming......again. I was just reminded that I have plans for a .50 sized Velie 'Coupe. If I remember correctly, the are from RCM.
I may just dig them out and have a new Winter project !

Sounds good Tom, I have never seen one of these planes in person, or online fly before.. Maybe we can trim flight two of them this year...

Interestingly, the Monoprep that I plan to model, is located in Blakesburg, Iowa.
It would be neat to fly the models together. The Quad Cities would be a fitting location, if we could work it out.

I have been busy painting the walls and ceiling in the basement, to make better shop and toy space And all round better use for the area, it was SO dark and dreary.
But I slipped over and worked on the Moncoupe some more tonight, and I have a couple nice pics to share !

I also finally got the landing gear back on !This plane isn't supposed to have a tie bar type axle between the wheels. The suspension pivots from the center, and the outer struts dampen the movement. HOWEVER , it did come with the center piece rouged out and bolted up, so I am going to leave it on until I find out how oft the landings are. The upper strut mount shouldn't take a big hit with the axle tieing the wheels together.

Neat project foodstick.
Neat project foodstick.
I like the rivet detail.
I have an old timer with a landing gear setup similar to yours. I found it necessary to add that "spreaderbar" to keep the landing gear in a stable position.
