Great thread guys, I'm picking my trailer up in the morning and now I have some great ideas on how to set it up. I've been debating buying a trailer for quit some time now and after reading this thread I don't know how I made it without one.

Thanks to all who have posted...Larry

Been looking for a trailer forever and lucked up on a deal... My problem is that my truck (ford ranger 4.0 v6) is a little small and light.. The trailer is a 7x 14 dual axle.. It pulls the trailer fine until I get past 60...Of course I cant pull it in overdrive.. What should I do?? Get a smaller trailer??The trailer is very light for its size, but its so draggy. My buddy wants to trade even for his single axle v-nose 7x12.. His is already set up, mine isn't it's empty.......What to do what to do I'm sure not buying a 20k truck just to haul my airplanes

If the condition of the 7x12 is as good or better as yours, then I'd take the trade. Dual axle for our purposes is not desired and makes for a lot more road resistance when towing. How about hooking up his trailer and taking it for a ride to see how it does with your truck?

Betcha dint know a 5.0 Mustang engine and trans will drop in that Ranger rather easily (if you use a conversion kit), and you can get those engines and trannies for entirely reasonable prices at a good boneyard.

Makes a way better model airplane hauler. Stay away from the NOx, though. Real tough on the rear skins.

After doing a fair bit of reading on this forum, a friend and I decided to build twins. We both bought the Canadian Tire 4X8 frame and built a 4X4X8 frame from 1/8 X 2 inch angle steel. Same as Blackie's trailer only 1 foot lower. We used 3/4 inch ply for the box. We figured we would need all the weight we could get to keep them from bouncing too much. So far everything is looking great. We have to put the plywood in mine tomorrow. Then we have to build and attach the rear door. We will be doing the same as Blackie did on his for the door. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow of both of them before we put the wood in mine. I will be towing mine with a Golf TDI and Steve will be towing with a Tuscon. I guess we will see how the Golf does with a trailer. We think the trailers will come out around 650lbs each empty.

Craig

Let me know how the Golf pulls the trailer. I'm building a trailer for myself and the wife's car is a TDI Jetta. I would think they should pull about the same.

Taildragger,
My wifes truck is the same as yours. Plenty of power, not enough mass to tow larger trailers safely. Something I used to do with my 1/2 ton when towing our catalina 22 was to put a bunch of weight in the bed to improve the traction and give a better ride while driving. Kept the back of the truck from being pushed around by the trailer. You only gotta feel your rear end slide once to give you a whole new frame of mind while towing.

I ended up trading my 7x14 dual for the single axle 7x12 v nose.. Pulls much better and is a better built trailer than the one I had... Plus all the setup was done!! tile floor, wiring/elec.,racks, paint, ect.. Can post pics..

I'll let you know DAve. I hope t do a test pull this week. We have both trailers at the same point right now wilth only the rear door to add. My friend pulled his last week with the Tuscon and said he never even knew it was there. My Golf is the 04 with the new engine. I think it has 100HP instead of the previous with 90HP. The top of the trailer sticks about 6 inches above the roof of the car.

Well I told you guys I traded to a local flyer....My 7x14 dual axle I just bought, for a single axle 7x14'l(12' square) v nose trailer.. I have finnaly set it up.. Not all my planes are in there yet and its already almost full....lol[X(].. He left the tile floor and electrical wiring.. The one I had was just an empty box... So that saved me time and money on the extra work.. The inside was painted white.. I built a rack out of pvc piping in the front for my smaller stuff.. I have been needing a trailer for a while.I just bought the 7x14 on a whim from my boss at work and traded even to this one.. The other was was worth a little more but I had roughly 1600.00 in it... I think I did good on this one...[8D] I refuse to pay 3500.00 + for somthing as cheaply built as all these cargo trailers.. If you have patience, you can pull anything off. Plus it is built twice better than the other one, and pulls much better behind my small truck..Heres a few pics..
