Dennis Bryant's 96" span Feiseler Storch
Building a Dennis Bryant 96" wing Feiseler Storch.
Confused on how to build the rfont and rear wing frames. Plan says laminate three pieces die cut ply for front and rear wing frames
but plans do not show which is front and which is rear. Side view shows music wire sandwiched in the center of the laminations but I can't figure that one out. All laser cut parts and wing frame parts are on disc file No. 9.
Any help please?

jeryz, I started building one a few years ago and got past the point wich you are at now , I have been working on it( on and off) for a while so things are a little fuzzy . When i get more time i will look at my plans and take some pics of what i have and post it , hope it will help . I'll try to get some more info in the next couple days. But if anyone with current info or a better memory wants to chip in >>>

jerryZ , I dragged out the Storch and took some pics . I hope they are of some use .
The lamination of the frames are pretty much as shown on the plans .( i didnt get a disc , i have just 3 sheets of plans )
I know i studied that area for quite a while at the time i assembled it . The wires get built into the frame laminations so be sure to lay it all out before gluing anything
please feel free to ask if you need any other pics , I will try to explain in more detail if needed

Hi harris12 ,
The build is pretty straight forward per the plans , I dont have an instruction manual or disc as some posts have refered to , only the plans .
If you have plenty of kit building experience it wont be an issue , If this is your first it may prove to be a good challenge .
The best tip i can give is to study every sheet of the plans and explore all views and plan notes on the views before beginning .
I however have not completed mine at this point (still have 1 wing panel to complete) , so mine is still a work in progress .
I started with the fuselage and tail group first because setting the wires properly seamed like a primary issue that i needed to tackle before building the wings.
It wasnt as difficult as i believed it would be and proved not to be a problem after a few hours of close studying .
I did get the scale landing gear , after looking at the build up in the plans i came to the conclusion it was worth the extra money to have the parts already made.
If you need any pics of a specific areacontact me , i will provide what i can .
Good luck on your Build , Chris

Hi CK1,
Just one question on the build: I am using the bob holaman laser cut parts as discussed, as this is a metric plan did you use imperial sizes or metric sizes of wood for the strip and sheet? I am curently compiling a list of the strip and sheet needed.
Cheers,
Adam.

Hi harris12 ,
I have been using the readily avail. sizes of balsa strips and sheeting that are close to the metric sizes stated on the plans .
I have not tried to find a source of metric sized wood . The usual 1/16" , 3/32" , 1/8 " stock is adequate, and usualy more than adequate.
The same applies to the plywood , use 5 ply in the closest size avail to the metric size stated on the plans as needed.
For the thin ply is used 1/32 door skin (i believe it is 2 ply)

RE: Dennis Bryant's 96" span Feiseler Storch
Hi CK1 and Harris12,
I just got a set of plans and plan on attempting to build the Storch. I must say that they seem pretty complicated but as I look at them more and more things make more sense. I hope you both keep up your posts.
I ordered the laser cut parts, cowl, and LG so I guess I'm committed. I have a question about good web sources for the balsa, spruce, and brass... anyone supply balsa and spruce strips in 48" lengths?? Any help would be appreciated. Bob H. doesn't supply a materials kit anymore and he doesn't have a materials list either.... any chance either of you might have one??
Thanks for any help,
Bill

Bill , I dont have a materials list , I did have a good supply of balsa stock , but it is going fast . I have been getting mine from my LHS
He gets most of it from SIG and in the 48" lengths of balsa and spruce .
Good luck on your build

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your reply and info about Sig.. It's a big help with the 48" lengths.
From the looks of your photos your Storch is well along and looking great. I have a little trip planned and an ARF to finish before I actually start the Storch but I am eager to get going on it.
Thanks again,
Bill

Hi CK1,
Did you use balsa or hardwood dowel for the fuse stringers, cabin etc (3 ,5 mm diameters) on the bryant storch. It says on the plans unless otherwise stated all wood is balsa, but I would have though all dowel would be hardwood dowel? Also what density of balsa would you recommend for the fuse longerons?
Many thanks
Adam.

RE: Dennis Bryant's 96" span Feiseler Storch
Adam , I used hard balsa for the longerons and 1/8"hardwood dowel for the side stringers , top stringer and cabin area (frame outline)
The fuselage is actually very rugged when fully complete , the stringers and longeron cap strips really stiffen things up .

Hi Adam,
Thank you, I'd love your list. I've purchased some wood already and have started building but I'm sure I don't have all the wood required.
I started with the wings... so far, so good...
Thanks again,
Bill

RE: Dennis Bryant's 96" span Feiseler Storch
I am interested in building the Storch as well. I have a plan from Sid Morgan (drawn by Robert Sweitzer in 1970). Looks like the Bryant plan has more prototypical cockpit frame, so I may switch.
Would someone please email me a copy of the materials list mentioned in this thread. Anyone convert it to imperial measure?

Hi CK1,
I just want to say that your photos have been a tremendous help... once I saw your photos the plans were much more understandable..
Thank you,
Bill

Does this plane ( 96" ws Built from Bob Holman Plans) tend to be tail heavy or nose heavy????
I'm planning on using a fairly light weight OS FX .91 (2 stroke) since it fits inside the cowl without cutting...
Thanks,
Bill

I was informed at another site that this Storch is fairly well balance as designed... with an Saito .80 it needed about 4 more ozs up front...
Not sure where others are at in their build but I thought this might help others... I wasn't sure how to get the wing mounting wires properly oriented to the fuselage and came up with this.
It ensures that the wing is centered on the fuselage and the wires that hold the wing in in the right place with the proper incidence. Also shows how I used a 12oz Sullivan round fuel tank.

Excellent Pictures Bill, keep em coming. I like the idea for wing centres. Is it just 2 pieces of wood with a photocopy of the drawing?

Adam.
