BigBoat,

I downloaded your autoAdance code and made a few changes to suit my own needs and I was wondering would I be better off using a 8 mhz osc on my pic? If so how would I need to configure the Timer prescale? Also what is the inital timing? ie at what degrees is the hall sensor set at 28 degrees or so? Thanks

@Charlie.
Not only the C-code, but also the code of the Exelfile has to be changed if you will use a other ocsilatorfrequentie.
I don't understand why you will change the ocs-time, it's not so easy to change the timing.
The hallsensor has to be placed at the normal ignitiontimingpoint of your engine, somewhere between 28 and 32 degrees.

Finaly sorted out enough of the bugs to get a motor running. Got the help of someone more experienced in electronics. He checked my original work very closely. My work is good, I had done everything according to the instructions, which was my biggest problem.

Call it what you want, but for those that have built projects like this I'm sure you will all appreciate the "help".

Detonation.

The advance curve for a 2 stroke is opposite to that of a 4 stroke. A 4 stroke will advance as rpm rise, a 2 stroke retards as rpm rise.

The graph below shows a typical curve for both.

At max rpm my Ryobi starts detonating at 22 degrees. If I ran the curves descibed here it would have blown up in minutes.

Coil.

Forget making an ignition coil. I couldn't find a pocket bike with cdi coil they all seem to be magneto ignition. The pitbikes and larger quads have cdi and use a coil identical to my XR600 coil. It is small and light and $15AUD, and works.

That is interesting what you mentioned about the advance curve.Does'nt make sense though. how do you gain anything by retarding the timing as the rpm increases? The fact that one is a 4 cycle and one is a 2 cycle should not make any difference as to the advance curve. There are several factors that cause detonation. low octain fuel being one.

I have a number of books here on 2 stroke theory written by respected people in the know. I could go on and explain but suggest you use your favourite search engine and all your questions will be answered. In short a 2 stroke is very inefficient at low speed, but of course there is more to it.

Edit: you will aslo find some 2 stroke curves if you look. I know what causes detonation, for the record I'm using highest octane available 98 and 30:1 oil.

Unziping to folder and opening with programming software sounds easier and should work???
Just how do you have any idea what is easier for me to do to get a quick look at a hex file? Did you know that I keep MPLab and other important software on a separate computer from the one I use to answer e-mails, surf the Internet, and participate in forums? That computer wasn't turned on at the time. Doing as I did will tell someone what is in the hex file. If it is corrupted, it will appear that way. It is just not going to invert two of the hex digits and leave the rest untouched.

edit: I hope people have been reading what bigboat has been saying.
I have been from the start of this thread. We all owe thanks to Bigboat for providing the information originally and for the gracious help he has provided to anyone and everyone who has come along. I have never seen him not help a sincere person who was trying to make this DIY CDI work. He is not getting paid for his efforts. I just reviewed the Hall sensor connections, and they look OK to me.

Bigboat doesn't need any defense, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank him in this theater of criticism you are trying to create. There's an American saying, ''Pioneers take all the arrows.'' I am sure Bigboat will understand what that means.

John

1) I was refering to what was easier for me.
2) The line of hex "I" posted is correct.
3) The sensor connections were in fact wrong and have since been corrected, in red. Not to mention led connection, parts list, I could go on. I suggest you also get it write, specialy if you are going to attack someone.
4) Fault finding is necessary when something doesn't work, call it what you like, you have no idea.
5) I am designing my own switchmode cdi.

Just in case John was wondering, I thanked bigboat for posting the cdi in an email around the time I started building it.

Have a nice day

You refer to experts and your own work. How about giving some reference citations, particularly for your claim that the advance curves are opposite for 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines, that can be checked. Can you provide the schematic and pictures of the PCB for your redesigned and working ignition?

Doesn't time "fly" when your having fun, no pun intended.

You have no idea (said that before) what i've been doing? How can you make such a rediculous statement?

If you are serious you are kidding no one but yourself with your lies.

I wonder if it occured to John yet that I didn't read his post until today.

Anyway, I won't be engaging in any more of this nonsense. I'm about getting a cdi working not causing trouble.

So I started another thread in this forum.

Cheers
Dave

1) I was refering to what was easier for me.
You have do nothing for this project and you want it still easier ?
With your experiens you can write the help file for us.

2) The line of hex ''I'' posted is correct.
Everything on the cdi-website is correct, or did you write your own (hex) programm ?

3) The sensor connections were in fact wrong and have since been corrected, in red. Not to mention led connection, parts list, I could go on. I suggest you also get it write, specialy if you are going to attack someone.
Nobody is perfect and we are not a professional company with ten or more employees who can correct wat was "wrong".
Noboby was payed for wat he or see have done, it have cost me only a lot of money to built the prototypes.
But now you can help us with your knowhow to write a FAQ and coorect wat was / is wrong.

4) Fault finding is necessary when something doesn't work, call it what you like, you have no idea.
You get a "end product" and you forgot all the work wat we have done befor you found this "end product" on the internet.
Befor this "end product" will be a "end product" we struggle 2 years with "fault finding"..........and we don't know wat fault finding is ?

5) I am designing my own switchmode cdi.
You forgot the word "Ones" at the beginning of line 5.

Hello, after some absence, to be involved with something:[sm=75_75.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=tongue_smile.gif]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHiBnlV7_J4

once more convinced that this ignition works perfectly! engine is 29.9 cc of mower, 4 channels, 2 rings, works great.

and again I apologize for bad English, I use Google translator ...

Congratulated all involved in this wonderful hobby

Great to see the ignition is working on your engine.
Now you can play with the ignitioncurve into the Exelsheet to find more rpm.

I have good speed-7000 rpm., the transition from Low to high speed is ideal, I think very well are the parameters for PIC processors.

Greetings to all modelist, Bulgaria, Silistra

..... CDI leaves from the first time without any adjustments or scheme or in software, I think everything is OK, and it is unnecessary disputes, there must be people like Bigboat!!! However, this hobby

.... there are many shops, but the money ......

Is it possible to connect controller section to a standard transistor and ignition coil?

Sorry for the delay.
Yes it's possible to do, but you need a fast transistor or better a FET.

Hi, this is an idea to try, but what's the point when we need a more powerful battery and ignition coil will be hard, but I think the idea should be tested

I really need to be a FET, the other moment is the weight ...
maybe people have a problem with high-voltage coil??
I use one from a.... electric
lighter to gas stove

....or electroshock baton ....

At this end we are building small four stroke engines and weight is not of concern. Neither is high rpm but a well performed engine is and this is why we would like to get this system working. Most engines so far have been single cylinder or twins with the last one a four pot. In this last engine, it was decided to go with glow ignition and avoid the spark as there was not much information available.
Now the V8 is on the drawing board and we would like to make use of this alternative.

I just got done testing my HV side of the circuit and i am getting almost 800V from the coil. The highest voltage my components (capacitor & SCR) can handle is 630V. What can i do to reduce this to 400-500V? How many winds do i add/subtract?

How do you test the voltage, with or without a resistor ?
A open Voltage is allway higher without a load.
