landing gear??????

i have an aero ace and love flying it. but it would be even more fun to have landing gear. i bought some landing gear off of aeroacemods.com but when i got it i was flying and i lost the front part of the landing gear. i've tryed to make some but it was too heavy. is there any other place that sells landing gear? please help.

wouldn't the one with 3 wheels spin out easier? how did you get the front wheels on some of those pics to stay in place. everytime i try it, it always moves.

I found that by either just keeping the hot wheels on their axel and making a little spacer block to hold them away form the plane's undercarrage (I use double face tatpe to hold the spacer onto the undercarrage and to attach the axel to the spacer - with a a piece of black duct tape over the whole thing to hold it more secure and blend it into the planes body) that I get really good rotation of the wheels and no fussing with having to cut and shape a landing gear strut set. I have now stripped down another hot wheels and left the wheel assembly attached to a small part of the cars undercarrage (I cut it off the rest of the car with a hack saw). I don't know if that will add too much weight but it's not much and gives a good setting to hold the wheel assembly ridged.
I did use just one wheel for the rear (with a new bent wheel strut taped to the end of the tail boom at the junction with the tail) and will use some hot wheels track to get a streight take off - IF I can find my old hot wheels track!

mcneil, i'l try the axle idea i always cut the axle in half cause i never thought it was possible to get it to fit. what was the spacer made out of? it's a good thing somebody finally told me how to actually assemble it. i've tried probably over 20 designs and not one of them was success. i've torn apart 30-40 cars and hopefully not much more.

Actually the pics look good. I'd move the front wheels back a bit to just in front of the on-off switch. I'd add the tail wheel to the strut. You can twist it a bit to get it to line the plane up streigth for takeoff. If you use hot wheels track to control take off you'll be fine. The wheel and axel set is hard to remove. I had to use a small chisel and hamer it free - on the set I took off of the car's undercarrage. ( I have not yet tried the wheels left on a pieceof the cars undercarrage - it's windy out today) The spacers I have used are a small piece of balsa that fits just inside the axel length and is just thick enough to have the wheels clear the plane's undercarrage. I also used a piece of fairly ridged foam block to do the same thing. I don't know if one is better then the other but the balsa is easier to shape precisley.

where did you get the track? i have had a hard time finding any hot wheels track.also do you any pics of where you put the front wheels, what the piece of balsa looks like on it, what the rear wheel looks like, and what it looks like from a side view. that would help a lot.

Go to rcuniverse.com and then to "Electric indoor and Micro..." and then to "Air Hogs Aero Ace" and p54 post 1351. Not such good pics yet - too far away. But you will see the wheels at this stage. I think that the weight might be a bit too high to get a rolling take off and so I might sand the rims narrower. (leaving the axel to have a wider contact to avoid tipping of the wheels on the axel - I'll sand from the inside to maintain the max spread between the wheels) I will also probadly make the axel wider since the plane tends to be tippi on rolling takeoff. As far as I know you would have to buy a new hot wheels set at a toy store. I have never seen track separate. I am working on a wooden track piece that might work but that's gettinga bit ahead of the story. The balsa spacer piece (or foam piece) to hold the wheels is about 3/4 '" (20mm) wide to go between the wheels and about 3/8" inch (10mm) high. Just a bit more then 1/2 the wheels diameter to clear the planes undercarrage. If I widen the wheel spread that will change things a bit.

rc18 - Ya - 1/2" duro on the front and 3/8 " on the back with a 1/32 wire axel and landing strut would be excellent. Below I've piced my latest changes and the takeoff track i made (since I can't find my car track). I decided to elliminate the spacer because I wanted to increase the width between the wheels to 1.25 inches to give greater takeoff stability. By doing that I automatically clear the planes undercarrage. I made the whole new assembly by sanding down the inside of the hot wheel wheels so that the outer rim is only 1/8" wide. There is an innern hub that is still the origional width so the wheel won't wobble on the axel. I shaped the landing strut into a "U" shape that lays on the planes underecarrage so that I could get a good taping surface. Then angleed it out and down a bit before bending the end into a short axel and then bending over the last 1/8" to hold the wheel on. Note that the hub of the wheel faces out so that I can get greater clearence in the groove of my takeoff track.
The track is 1/2" thick with 1/8' depth cut away on the outside on both sides so that the front wheels ride outside of the rased center section. Then a grove is cut down the middle for the rear wheel to ride in. the track I have at this point is 7 feet long. With the wind and rain here I have only tried to launch in the house and I don't have quite enough runway yet. Putting the track on a card table the plane comes off too slow and drops but almost gets enough speed just before it hits the floor. A little more experimenting and i think I'll have it.
