Thinking about it it may not be good idea to add pound or two to the Cowl that is hanging there by just a few small screws, I will look in to the fishing dep and see what lead they have or I could still do the lead shot thing and make my own box to put it in

Ok did some weight testing and was pretty shocked at what I found this may not be out of the norm for scale though, I used my #7 shot to do this and when I balanced at the 100mm mark on the wing ( upside-down and with the gear retracted in the wing) I ended up putting 3.10 lbs of weight in the forward section of the cowl. this shot is in a plastic bag and spread out over the whole bottom of the front end of the cowl, OMG!

There is not much room to add back by the firewall and if I did I may have to go up to 4 + pounds at the fire wall, I dont know where I can put that much weight (lead) up there. I dont know what the AUW is at this point but will find out later, I still need to put some blocks in the fuse where the screws for the cowl will go.

WOW that is Fantastic! I wish I had a machine to do that kind of stuff, Buying used the eng was already in place and is a G26 I would need to do some fancy stuff to make it like that, I may try and rethink this but flying season is getting short and would like to atleast fly the ship a couple times before the long winter which will give me plenty of time to come up with something a little better than what I have.

I dont like the idea of adding weight to the cowl ether but was at a loss for a short term fix for now and holy cow 3lbs! that is a lot to put some where, if it goes further back it will be more weight.

I'm working on a Much bigger version then this one,Vailly Aviation 97"Wingspan. The designer of this one says don't be suprised to put about 10lbs on the nose of it!![X(] Just keep adding until its balanced he tells me. His prototype was 49lbs with a Quadra Q100 in the nose! I'm planning a DA85 and a canister muffler so I'll be adding alot of wight to make up for the light DA85!!

Yeeeeha that is a nice one, and the DA is light putting the can on it you will have to add plenty of weight.

Very cool idea for the wgt, xtra....

using the standoffs extended forward...very cool..!

100% ..the futher forward, the less you'll need...

don't let the amount of wgt scare you..its not a pattern ship or 3d'r

that wing is huge & thick, provides a LOT of lift.

I was considering selling mine til I got a used G38 recently and think that it will work out well, it has a magneto and a big flywheel and weighs about 5 LB. Would turn a 3 blade too. Fits within the cowl compltely. Too bad it sounds like a big weed whacker.

I am now considering a G38 also, it would not be that hard to swap out the 26 for the 38

Hi

My tiffie is safe in her box - still busy with final details on her German sister the FW190. I love the Zenoah 38cc - any comments on if it would work in the Tiffie? Some work will have to be done on the firewall. I live in Pretoria South Africa - 26cc is just not a option - to high above sea level.

Did a test-flight today with cg at 10.5 cm. It worked out really well.

I started up with 500g in a ring around the nose, just behind the propeller. (And a G-38).

That placed the CG at 10 cm. When reducing speed for landing, it tended to dip down the nose quite hard.
(Unless coming in fast and hot)

Then put 50g in the tail. That moved CG 0.5cm back to 10.5cm. What a difference!!!!

As an after-thought;

By experience (You can calculate it);

Instead of adding 50g in the tail, one could remove about 4 times as much in the nose.

That means about 500 - (50x4) = 300g would have been enough in the nose......

Well, after an very long time, she finally made to the field for some taxi testing and bug checks....hmmm been way too long.. 3mm of dust to remove.
Life just gets in way of fun, sometimes.
She'll be in the air this week or next, weather permitting.

Cannons on way from England this week,*see the new YT forum:
[link=http://www.ytinternational.co.uk/forum/index.php]YT forum[/link]

-Pittss3s awesome rockets painted and ready to mount this later this winter, along with the final bits and weathering to dress her up.
-a/c from the 1st batch of complete composite build.
-8.35kg ( 18.4 lbs )
-cg at 105mm for now.
-KMP gen 5 air up/down ( if anyone has a pair of Sierra & wants to sell em, email me please ([email protected])
Nothing wrong with the OEM retracts, they work very nicely but valve not adjustable for speed & I just like the look of the Sierra legs.
-Resin exhaust as mentioned earlier posts.
-Robarts adjustable valve, lines & tank.
-Pull/pull Sullivan carbon rod aft, just 'cause :-)
-Evolution 35GT2 w/ wraparound pitts muffler.
-Xoar 18x8 3 bld
-Spit 120mm spinner from DB Sport&Scale in England
-6800 rpm on ground
-idles at 1450
*2 clicks of throttle and she moving easily in 2" tall, thick grass.... surprised the H*LL outa me for sure!
-2100 6v RX
-2300 7.4v lipo for ign.
-JR821 throughout, except throttle, choke & flaps(yes choke...lazy huh!) & extra safety in case shut off needed, no electronic kill other than on/off switch.
-JR921 Rx
-JR9303 2.4

After 15 min of chasing worms, found all ( I hope ) the things I missed w/ loc tite or secured

** Originally, I had it at 9kg... Because I screwed up and marked cg at 100mm back from leading edge just beside the fuse!
Whoops..... that was a 20mm forward mistake. Correcting was a .68kg savings ( about 1.5 lbs saving )

Beside is a buddies Top Flight Gold Kit P51B.

WOW is the best thing I can think of.

Tuesday Evening:

Taxi to center on grass runway. No flaps. 20c (68-69F) humidity about 60, steady breeze down runway 3-4 km (2mph)gentle gusts to about 7-8km(5mph).
Started slow application of throttle, slight corrections as it built up speed, remained very straight.
By about 100' elevator was at neutral, tail wheel up, just a slight bump to elev to correct a slight nose down, just a hint of rudder. Lifted off by itself about 200' and maybe 40kph(25 mph).

Elev at 30% expo, still too touchy. Climbed at 30-35 deg. Pulled slightly to left as expected, but didn't lower wing. Needed 4-5 clicks of right trim to level wings, about 6 clicks to lower nose,
no rudder trim needed. After leveling, it was climbing slightly, put gear up, still climbed a little.
On the second pass, it was hands off, literally held them over my head to prove the crowd of nay sayers behind me, that it is NOT a brick. Perfect level & straight,
just under 1/2 throttle about 80kmp (50 mph). Nose sinks slightly in bank turns as expected, blip of throttle corrects. Did not do much rudder work, but it is very effective.

At 1/2 throttle, flaps deployed to 1/2, slight pop up, but settled back into level flight. Added a little throttle and deployed full flap. No rise and slight decease in speed. Dropped gear, remained level & a slight decrease in speed.
To prove a point once more, another pass down center line 50' up , full flap, gear down, 1/2 T, hands off....... WONDERFULL
I still have a smile on face today.

Having so much fun, & forgetting to set the timer.....well...I ran her dry...Dead stick on down leg, 100' up, 200 out. Dropped nose, raised gear, raised flaps & started long shallow turn. Kept it
turning until she was lined up with runway NO SIGNS OF STALL what so ever, leveled wings about 30' up and 75' out, kept nose ever so slightly down.....

SHE JUST FLOATED IN, TOUCHED DOWN DOING ABOUT 20kmp (15 mph) maybe slightly faster, but VERY slow, no flaps, gear up, level with no signs of a stall .............

[:@]Unfortunately it was 20' shy of the runway, in 18" tall wet grass(hay)
Tried to flare it just as it went in, but tall grass kept it from flare.
Broke a prop, 1/2" crack in chin bottom and shattered the rad. Thats it, not even one more scratch.

If only I could describe the look on the faces behind me! that quieted the crowd....

18 lbs...she'll never fly, she'll be a brick..if you loose engine it'll fall straight down..

land her at speed or you'll.....

HA !

Back to field as soon as I replace fuel tank w/ larger. 14 ounce now, but the 35 seems to be a fuel hog, so we'll go bigger, lots of room still.
Have the same prop but in 6 pitch, We'll give it a try also.

Thanks for designing such a great plane KMP/YT !!! Hope you are proud of it as you should be & I am !

* The 9303 has 3 position flap toggle & flap delay settings from 0 to 2 seconds. So deploy to 1/2 flap take 2 seconds, then to full is another 2. Going directly from 0 to full is 4 seconds.

I have a friend who with scale detail his ended up at 19lb and would not fly it, after many phone calls he was eventually persuaded to give it a go, you should have seen the grin on his face once she had landed. The Tiffy is a real ***** cat.

Glenn,

Great write up on your Typhoon and I'm glad to hear it flies extremely well. I was a little worried myself how this model would fly at such a weight.

I purchased one , the all composite version, from KMP back in August and it will be my winter project and I plan on electrifying it. It will be running a brushless motor equivelant to a 160 size engine and using 10S lipos. I have purchase a Robart retractable tailwheel assembly to give it added scale looks, plus I will be ordering the cannon set also. Hopefully when finished, it will fly as well as yours.

Kwik,

Beautiful in flight pictures of your Typhoon. Love the working hardpoints under the wings; I may have to pick up a set for mine.

Cheers,
Peter

Does anybody have pics of thier tailwheel steering setup? Im having a heck of a time trying to set mine up. Im using the stock supplied ESM tailwheel. Dont like the tiller style they say to use[:@] The ESM version is diff from KMP version in terms of details on the model. 1st appearance seems good.......next thing I know im re-engineering nearly every part of the the manual to assemble the model!!![:@]
