RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
The spinners from yellow aircraft are about 80 USD. They are neither cut to accommodate the prop nor are they drilled and tapped (for mounting the cone to the backplate).
There are advantages and disadvantages to the Yellow spinner. It's good because it's scale and also because it's heavy (nose weight needed on Zeros). The major disadvantages are that you need to do all the cutting and drilling and tapping, and because it's heavy, it must be very carefully balanced or you'll do damage to the motor, plane, or both.
I tried to use two (one came with my Yellow Zero and I bought a replacement from Yellow), but I could never get either of them accurately balanced. They now sit on my shelf and I just ordered one from Gene Barton. His are scale in both size and profile (for the Bert Baker/Yellow Aircraft Zero) and he can also accurately cut for a prop and mount the cone to the backplate (extra 25 dollars). I think that I paid about $55 for the spinner and another $25 the extra work when I ordered from Gene. So for the same price of the Yellow you can have one cut and mounted (and also bead-blasted so that it's ready to accepted paint) when you order from Gene Barton. Very nice guy, too.
He is responsive to email, so I would go to his website (www.genebarton.com) and send him a note to get the cost and delivery estimate (not sure if he keeps them all in stock).
Good luck.
Noah

This is a Great Planes spinner http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGDA9&P=7 That I used. Its cheap and although not scale it has the look of the era.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
thanks for the info ,but gene barton says he no longer makes the spinner for the giant scale zero.
even a plastic spinner would be ok, have seen them on youtube and they look good.
if any one knows of any where to get a scale spinner for the zero it would be great.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
These guys do world models Zero spinners up to 89mm very good service & quick postage.
I used a 57mm on my 50 sized CMP Zero and it looked perfect.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Doing the calculations between the 53.5'' 50size Zero & the 82'' Zero the 89mm spinner they do would be the same relative size as the 57mm is on the 53'' Zero.
If you divide the 2100mm wingpan by the 1360mm wingspan you get 1.5....
If you divide the 89mm spinner by the 57mm spinner you get 1.5....
I'm definately no einstien but I think it works out ?.
Therefore if you got the 89mm it would look the same for the relative size as mine.
Sh#t hope that makes sense better go before I get my self in any deeper.
All the best Steffan.

Back on the home page it asks that when you place the order you list the description/Colour & amount you want in the comments section when you fill out your details.
Then they will e-mail you back with availability and estimated delivery time , my order arrived with in a week ! & I,m in the middle of Bumville nowhere.
Cheers Fellas. Just finished my nightshifts so have five days off to fly & build ...hopefully not repair !!.

Finally balanced mine. Took 26oz of lead shot in the nose with a Zenoha G-62 to put the balance point at 145mm. It is my plan to drill holes in the wt. To move the CG back after the first ten flights. I built a box that mounts to the engine mounting box that came with the kit, and puts the wt just behind the front of the cowl above the engine fly wheel and coil.

Just started building mine. What is the best retract/strut/wheel combination to use. Make & part/ reference numbers would be great so I know what to order.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Brought mine out on Sunday to test fly it and thought I was in a keystone cops re-run. I loaded the plane in the car along with my practice plane and headed to the field. Half way there I realized I had forgotten my fuel, not likely anyone would have some to barrow so turned it around and got the fuel. While there I went through what I needed in my mind and when satisfied I headed back out. Got to the same place in the drive and realized I had forgotten the miller starter, guess I hand start it this time, and continued on. Got to the field and started putting the Zero together. While manually locking the LG down I realized the valve was in the retracted position. So I had to turn on the radio to open the release line. While closed when I manually deployed the LG the first lock would pop off from the air pressure. So I turned on the radio and hit the switch but the LG acted the same. Take the wing back off only to find the retract pushrod (on the wing) is bottoming out on the fuel tank (on the fuse). So I bend the pushrod out of the way and manually push the spool to the deploy position, no retracts today, and button her back up. Roll it out to the flight line and fuel it, then wait my turn to fly. When my turn come I walk up to the plane and it is dripping fuel out the back of the wing. I defuel it and pull it aside to let it air out.
Checking it out at home I find that the retract pushrod did not stop till it hit the wheel collar. That put about 1/8 inch of the .042 dia pushrod through the tank. I’ve been hoping to run it in the back yard this week but the weather has not co-operated.
Some shoe goo and a screw and moving the retract valve mechanism back 2.5 inches on the wing and away we go. Hopefully this weekend.
As for giant scale retracts, the only pair I have that did not require a stint at the local model shop where from Sierra precision.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
flew mine today, it was windy so it was hard to get a good idea on the speed of this one but i felt it was slow.
My first takeoff role out the right strut came loose so after tightening them up. The role out was smooth and it lifted off quickly. During the climb out and first turn I had to hold down E. once that was trimmed out it needed 2clicks of right aileron. Did some diving and climbing at 60% T with no surprises. I flew it a 5pm and as with all dark camo planes it was silhouette on the sun side. I did a roll to both sides with the gear still down and it was pretty average. Should quicken up when the gear are retracted. I put the flaps down with half T and it started to climb. I reduced the T until it leveled off, I opted to not go any further to keep it flying right to the runway. I came out of my down wind turn at 200+ ft and dove steeply for the runway (45-60 degrees) pulling out into a shallow dive at twenty feet and reducing the T to a few clicks above idle. Once I leveled just above the runway reduced to idle and held it of with the E as it settled in very gently.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
I had my first flight and even though I built in 4 degrees in engine thrust to the right the Zero pulled hard left on take off. Members were mixed some say I have to hold a lot of right rudder others said I didn't have enough ground speed. I had minor damage to the landing geer that grounded me. Any thoughts.

Mine was flown on a windy day, and I was new to it, and it was very active on the runway before the stab started flying. Every time I look at the amount of right thrust on this model it makes me double take but it flys fine.
The rudder is so high on the fuse, mostly out of the prop. Blast.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Finally put it in the air after resetting the right offset and the take off could'nt have been better. I left the elevator in neutral until it gained enough ground speed and the tail lifted off then I gave it slight up and it lifted off very scale looking. It took some down trim and right aileron but nothing extreme. Mine came in at 23# ( I installed a smoke system) and flown with a fuji 43 ei and had plenty of speed. I landed without flaps and it settled right in for a perfect landing. I'm very happy with this model it's my first giant scale gasser. Thanks to all for your help!

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
I used 2 heavy washers that measured 4mm in thickness together to get the right thrust. I didn't have to use any rudder on take off. My down thrust is about the same

flew mine today. I have been leaning the engine each time in the air and we are getting close. my list of winter changes is growing.
- i have the E and R servos in the tail. plan to move the E forward fo remove some of the nose wt.
- the factory hinges are mounted in the center of the wing. the hinges need to be moved to the bottom surface to allow more flap movement. with the pressent movement the nose comes up and i have to hold down E. i need more Flap movement to bring that nose back down.
some pictures from today 24jul09, thanks john.
