Default Hobby Engine Leopard Track Upgrade

I just installed a set of HL pershing tracks onto a Hobby Engine Leopard 2. I had to make a few special parts but it works great. Now to upgrade the electronics.

I will have to do it when i find my camera. I just moved and havent gotten it unpacked. It really wasnt that bad to do. I made some parts that go into the road wheels to narrow the gap up for the guide teeth. I machined one out of aluminum on the lathe then made a mold and plastic copys of it with smooth-on type 300 plastic. the hard part was i had to make modified copys of the pershing sprockets to adapt to the hobby engine motors. I think i may get some HL metal gearboxs though.

It looks impressive. [sm=thumbup.gif] Did the work that you did significantly improve the way it drives? I always wanted to install Tamiya electronics in the Hobby Engine Abrams, but I never bought one because they were reported to require soooo much effort to make them worthy of the cost of those electronics. [] It would be cool to have a modern opponent for a Leo to battle.

I have had pretty good luck with the 'Smooth on' stuff. Easy for a beginner too.

something just dosnt look right with that rear sprocket drive wheel. it seems to be missing a 'divider' to hold the center pegs in right.

It most definitely drives better. I can do a full skid turn on shag carpet and go around and around with out throwing a track. I have a metal motor and gearbox ordered from mato. I'm still in the air over installing HL electronics or custom. I want to find a way to speed up the traverse too. It is supposed to take 6 sec, but takes 18.

I am looking to get the HE Leo and I think this conversion is great. Were the Pershing tracks long enough or did it take more than 1 set. I have an extra gear box that I was going to use on a T-34 project but I might be inclined to use that on this and use the Pershing sprocket as well. Also, how does the suspension hold up to the metal tracks? Does the back end sag when driving like the Bulldog with metal tracks?

Hi there, looks great, the tracks appear to be on backwards, the chevrons should point down the front idler, like a tractor tyre, that way they dig in, and are self clearing as the new mud, pushes the old mud out, the other way ther gather mud into the track, like a scoop, but thats a minor detail, i had the HE abrams, it was great in looks, but the rubber tracks really let it down, i always wondered if something could be done, and now my question has been answered in style, lucky you got skills in machining mould making and casting i think i would have to buy the metal track set from mato with drive cogs included, and use road wheels from pershing , but top marks for your skills, cheers,

Finally working on this thing again. Metal gearboxes. Weaker suspension springs. four 3300 mah 7.2 volts batteries configured into a 6600 mah 14.4 v battery. Sabertooth 2X10 rc for traction. not sure on turret yet thinking a servo for elevation and recoil. then a different motor or large continuous rotation servo on traverse. Also gyros on both traverse and elevation.

Got metal gearboxes installed. I replaced the elevation motor with a S3003 servo and moved the traverse motor into the turret. I plan to have a receiver in the turret and in the hull so I can rotate the turret a full 360 without having to worry about wires. I think a 3000 mah 7.2v pack for the turret should suffice. I got 360 degrees of turret rotation in about 2 sec. What do you guys think about a desert scheme Leopard, I have never seen one, think it would look cool.
