Default Speed 550 Motor for a glider

HELP - I need a Speed 550 can motor and gearbox for my World Models EP-Sailor glider - I tried their website, but, no motors for sale. Anyone know where I can get a set??

why don't you just run a brushless?

I agree, sounds like it is time to upgrade.

I run a 2814/12 in my 2 meter Spirit on two cells. The power is descent. Should you need more, you could always use three cells.

I even got a Himaxx 2025-5300 inrunner with its offset gearbox that I had lying around to fit in there on my Aspire.

550 is a big motor - coverting to brushless would throw the weight off and cause a big shift in CG that would only be fixable by adding large amounts of weight to the backend.
Not the best option.

going brushless w/ lipo would "save" a lot of weight in the front over the big can, and with the battery and esc right behind the motor you might even have to move the servos and reciever forward to compensate for the weight loss in the nose and I'd bet you'd still come out with less weight with more power and more mAh than using the can thus negating even the possibility of needing tail weight. Brushless is always better than cans, even if you somehow need to add dead weight to the nose. You will never need a brushless setup as heavy as a can to attain the same or even better power/weight ratio.

Guys - it doesn't make financial sense to go brushless - the motor, esc and lipos would cost almost 2X the cost of buying a new plane just for the included motor.

That's true but it's the way of the new world. The pros are that it would be lighter overall so it'll fly better. And even being lighter the Lipo pack will probably give you twice the motor run time so that means more flying or more flights on one charge.

The cons are that it'll cost more like you said but you'll have the motor, ESC, batteries and charger for the next E plane already.

And from a more practical point? You're running into the same thing I did a short time ago. They just don't sell that stuff any more.

If you're really serious about sticking with the old setup them PM me. I'll make you a screaming good deal on a big box of old can motors and gearboxes that I won't be using any more.

You can still get 550 motors ... but if they're not readilly available, try an Astro 05 Cobalt. They weigh about the same ... but the astro is a better motor

The differences between the 500, 550 and 600 can motors is mostly in the name.
Try a Graupner Speed 600.
Hobby Lobby.

Tower Hobby sells a Master Air Screw 550 with a gear box and prop for around $36.00. I have used this with a 2M Aspire with good results on 8 cells. Here is the part number LXZ903. It is a cheap set up.

But I would never advise anyone to put money into brushed motors with gear boxes.

Flying to me is all about air time. And brush less will get you more air time. Brush less motors are an investment you will not regret. But if you want to go brushed look at the Master Air Screw units.

If it's really airtime you want, pull the motor. push the servos all the way up to the front, add a couple ounces of weight and get a Hi Start. I did that with my Sig Riser. My Spirit has an 05 cobalt / 8X4 prop. It weighs about 4 pounds with the battery and everything. My Riser comes in at just over 2 pounds(34 oz). There have been times when I've had the riser up for almost an hour before I had to land it.

I have a brand new one. I am going with a brushless. I have the motor 550 and gearbox. Make me an offer.
