Nice Skydrill Ian.. Yes it is tight in there. That's why I poked them through the deck into the canopy. They can also be mounted to the sides with strong double sided tape or like you have with aileron mounting brackets.
What did it end up weighing?
Where in the name of Ned Kelly is Dingley Village?

RE: Skydrill Build Thread
G 'day 'Skaliwag',
Mine came out at 420 grams = 14.8 oz - tho mine does have a few things that would be making that as much as it is.
AP 061 R/C engine, throttle and rudder servos, AAA RX battery and a 2 oz tank.
Even with all that - to pick it up - it does not feel 'heavy' for its size. Some of the electric flyers picked it up and said
it would probably weigh more if they made one and fitted it out with Li-Poly battery etc.
Dingle Village is about 8 klm or 5 miles (or so) from Dandenong - which is South East of Melbourne.
Regards.
Ian

Good to see this one resurrected. SMALL is coming up and someone needed to put the pressure on Brian. And Rog, too. Mine's getting a little wore down but still performs well with the same Skyline .049 engine that's been on it all along. This little design is a worthy project, fer sure.

Yes, I am still around and feel the pressure. Have been crazy busy with the four kids and recently the snowy weather we have been getting down here in NC. I still can't believe they called off work due to "inclement weather."
Goal is to get to SMALL again this year along with the April gig here for the 1/2A fly-in that Bob is hosting.
Hopefully I will get a few 1/2A planes ready to go... including the Skydrill.
Tee Bee - What are you working on?

HFenn,
Nope, not finished with the Skydrill... but it would not take much: engine mounted, wing complete and so is empennage. Basically, just getting the radio installed and ready for covering.
Yours looks great. What engine are you using?

Hi, Brian. I thought that would help bring you out of the woods. Currently working on a Page Boy w/TD .010 when I get a little extra time. Also built a preproduction version of Steve's Scoundrel, a Das Splat Jr, and a small lecky biplane for SMALL. Will probably bring some of the ones I had there last year as well. That way you should have something to fly if you show up empty handed again. The newest ones have 2.4 receivers so maybe I won't have to spend as much time waiting for a frequency pin this year.

Mine has a rudder but I'd probably leave it off if I was to build another one since I don't use it much anyway. If I was using a throttle, I might retain the rudder function for hammerheads and such.

Most excellent. You're getting close, hfenn. Flew my Skydrill a couple of times yesterday. It was good to see it in the air again after several months of dormancy. I used to think it was fast with it's modified "speedy reedie" engine but it seemed almost snail-like after flying my Das Splat Jr w/TD .049 just a few minutes beforehand. I'm gaining a fast appreciation for the little TD .049 now.

Pong II's are cool. I built one in 85, Black Widow 2 channel, was lots of fun and handed it down to another flyer who put a TD on it. Built another in 99 and put a PAW .061 on it with lg, T&G was lots of fun. I think I sold it after a few years, don't really remember. Still have plans and templates, so may have to revisit that one.

Thanks, hfenn. I let Brian fly it last year at SMALL so now I'm giving him heck. He's a nice fella and I hope he's able to make it again this year.

Very good Brian ! If you work on planes you have less time to have more children thus you have more time to work on planes.
SMALL will be here before you know it !!
Is Joe riding with you this year?

Steve,
You are so wise with your words of wisdom. As they get older, I just get wiser in finding time to build
No, Joe is heading out to CA just prior to SMALL for a family reunion w/ his kids. He figured that he played a key role in the family and needs to be there.
Are you going to have your 1924 Dormoy Bathtub there ready to go?
Brian

Glad I asked about Joe. He is pit stopping here on his way out to CA and will stop for SMALL on the return trip.
The Dormoy will not make it for SMALL. Too many other projects ahead of it.
UC should make a good showing this year. What will you have?

Let's see, what am I bringing:
.020 Skycopter
.049 Skyray C/L model
.049 Pylong racer - Skyrdrill or Sureshark
.049 3-channel scale model - probably that biplane I showed everyone last year that I was designing (Amethyst Falcon). It has been on the drawing table for awhile (and past Design Contests) and needs to get flying.
Looking forward to this year - 20th Anniversary of SMALL. Should be a ton of fun with lots of stories of SMALL's past...
I need to figure out where to stay (hotel), given that I will not be going w/ Joe. Something other than Motel 6
