Can someone tell me if PPG Concept Urethane Clear available from Radio South can be used over standard automotive lacquer or butyrate dope?
Thanks.

Hi, I just wanted to add that PPG has a new line of paint called Shop line which is a knock off of the famous Omni brand paint. I am presently using the 661 clear and spray over anything that will stick to the base. It will even go over some of the popular spray can car paints which some of them are laquer. This brand is cheaper and looks great! Just a thought and good luck with your painting. R/C Kid

I wanted to bring this subject up again and see if others might chime in here...
I was wondering if Concept was able to be applied over different formulations and it appears to be somewhat true. Specifically, I would like to be able to buy a smaller bottle of Testors (they have some cool colors!) or even a spray can of auto touchup paint (which I would decant into my spray gun) when I need only a small amount of a certain color... might be more cost efficient than having to buy 5 different pints of DCC and having a bunch of leftovers that would go bad...

I also fly some controlline stunt and we have been putting urethane clear over dope for quite some time. PPG and other brands as well.
i have personally used it over buterate/nitrate/enamel/laquer/basecoat urethane/ and decals without any problems
it's a good ideato shoot a light coat over decals and let it setup for a few minutes before shoting the rest of the plane.
Dave.
by the way duplicolor touch up spray cans work quite well withut decanting. i believe they are laquer and yes i have used many of the colors in such a way.
these were both shot with "Transtar" high solids urethane clear wich is a less expensive alternative to PPG. there are laser printed decals on both of these planes and both have combinations of basecoat and laquer on them
Dave.

Good news! It appears that with this clearcoat, we can have our cake and eat it too.... flexibility to use different basecoats and still maintain compatability is extremely helpful.

Butyrate dope gases off for a long time- months and months. So, putting Concept over it unless it is very well- aged isn't prudent. Potential for cracking and/or crow's feet.
Over Nitrate, no problem.
PPG Concept Clear is wicked stuff for your lungs- a booth or outside air supply mask system highly recommended.
It adds quite a bit of weight , too.
It'll darken whatever color that it is shot over, but doesn't yellow.
Good Luck

Hey thanks for the coments but neither of those planes was buffed out.
the clear is that good!
ditto the coments about the health hazards (read the warning labels)
the stuff does look incredible if you wet sand with 1500 or better and buff it out, but i rarely bother. it looks pretty good if you shoot it right.
as far as shooting over buterate dope it probably is advisable to wait but i have severall times covered with silkspan shrunk it out cleared it uot primered it with laquer primer shot colors and cleared it all in the same weekend and severall of those planes are numerous years old and still look great. so yeah its a potential problem i suppose, but i havent experienced it.
