FMS sim on Windows Vista???

I've heard a variety of reports on the lack of compatibility of FMS on Vista. I notice that their site only mentions XP etc. Anyone use it on Vista? Anyone use it with their own transmitter attached? I have a Spectrum DX6. Any special mods or settings to worry about? Any other suggestions appreciated.

thanks richg99

RE: FMS sim on Windows Vista???

I have installed FMS on several machines running Vista (Home & Business). However, you will need to download the following file from the internet:

D3DRM.DLL

This file must be downloaded, and then saved in the following directory:

C:\Windows\System

Furthermore, it is sugested to run FMS in Windows XP compatibility mode. To do this, right click on the FMS icon on your desktop and select "Compatibility" from the pop-up menu. Select "Windows XP Compatibility" and hit OK.

With a Serial or USB interface, FMS can by used with your own transmitter.

FMS works fine with the Vista if you install the .dll file.

Just copy and paste it into the system 32 folder.
If your PC use system64...you have the get the 64 version of that .dll file.
You can download it or make a copy of it from your old XP OS.

If your PC only has USB ports..2.8 will error XP or Vista.
You need to create a ghost comport for those old D-dub ports.
Then just write a little patch file with Notepad.

If your PC has Vista and Nvidia....Just give up.lol
Most PC under $500 usually have vista and Nvidia.
You get a flashing screen. To get rid of the flashing..you have to turn off the textrue and it'll look great.lol

But if your PC is powerful enough and have a kick butt Nvidia card.
You can run Virtaul PC in Vista...then install XP in Virtaul if you have a copy of XP...then install FMS in XP.:)

Or with a powerful video card, it'll run photolistic sceneries in Vista as is...but no texture for 3D sceneries.
Just make the skybox images 2048x2048 pixels...and run it in smaller window mode...
It doen't matter you can make it the same size as full screen.lol
It dose it in mine without the flashing..but my screen sticks every so often becuase my video card is not powerful
enough to drive it. (128mb share memory)

RE: FMS sim on Windows Vista???

Thanks to both of you for your help. Now, I wonder if there is a "safe place" on the internet to get the .dll file and the files necessary to "unzip" it? I just did a Google search and found all sorts of possibilities, but also some warnings about foolishly downloading the files ...along with Mal-ware etc. Any suggestions? thanks Richg99

RE: FMS sim on Windows Vista???

Thank you.. I downloaded the file and unzipped it ( I think) and then copied and pasted it into the system folder.

I can now bring up FMS and fly with both the keyboard and with a joystick.

I now want to connect my DX6 Spektrum transmitter to more perfectly emulate my real ( crashing often ) experiences. I have a stereo cord that I believe I bought to do this job on my prior computer. However, I am not certain that it is the cord that I bought. Would it work, or do I need something else?

If it does work, it appears that the only place that I can plug it in is into the audio microphone port, or to either of the earphone ports on my Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook. Any and all help appreciated, thanks Richg99

RE: FMS sim on Windows Vista???

While I don't mind buying another device to get this to work....I am not certain that that device will work at all with Vista and my notebook.

From doing some other searching, the issue(s) may be more the notebook (Dell Inspiron 1525) than the program??? So far, after installing the dll file and the smart pro po.....the FMS program ignores the controls on the DX6.

The DX6 is automatically powered up by the computer when I plug the cable into the microphone port...but...that is all. regards, Richg99
