I am probably going to get this plane kit for my next build. I am not too fond of the bulbous canopy, and was thinking about making one out of solid balsa that matched the lines of the turtle deck in the rear. Something a little more stream-lined. And then just cover it with black monocote. Maybe trim the black with silver trim. Anybody ever do this?

You can also just cut the stock canopy down. Many people have done this on the .40 and .60 size so I see no reason the 1.20 would be any different. Usually I think most people just use the front half. Here's a picture of one of a 4* .40 I did.

Thanks for the replys. I'm not trying to be too picky, it's just that upward direction that the canopy makes coming off the turtle deck that I just don't care for. I guess I'll just do some experimenting when I get to that point.
ChuckW,
That's a very nice looking plane. I especially like the cowl. I will be putting a 26cc gas on mine, so no cowl, but I sure like yours.

Sounds like you will have a nice plane when you are done. I wouldn't mind having a big easy flying airplane with a gas engine. Just one more project to add to the list.

Check around the web for generic Four Star mods. I found one that shows you can turn the canopy around 108 degrees and then trim it. It supposedly ends up much sleeker and gives more of a racer look. Take a look a venture-60 for an approximation of what the "reverse trimmed" canopy looks like.

Thank you! The Venture 60 is exactly the look that I want. Now, I just have to figure out how to get a canopy. Maybe I will have to look into a "custom" canopy. Of course, Santa has to stop by first.

That pilot reminds me of an old boss I used to have!

i did it more complicated with canopy glue and monokote underneath and painted the base with aerogloss paint.
its hard to fish the T-nuts with this setup and it was a lot of work.

Mesa,
I'll dig up a few pictures of some 4 Star / Venture 60 mods. I found some somewhere that give a bit more detail on how to reverse the canopy.

For my 4 Star I cut out the canopy per stock configuration, then, holding the canopy along side the fuselage, I lowered the front of the canopy until the top of the canopy was inline with the angle of the turtle deck and cut the front of the canopy to fit around the front deck of the fuselage, then trimmed the sides to allow for about ¼” overhang. I applied hot air to the front of the canopy to form it around the front deck. Dyed the canopy with black Rit dye and attached the canopy with silicone and small screws.

Very nice! Might have to give that a try.
Hey, whats all the white powdery stuff under your plane!
(sorry, couldn't help myself)
