Arrgh! now what??
bought a savage XL month or so ago.
have taken it out nearly every weekend for a very quick bash. never gone through more than 1 tank each time.
i did the proper break in procedure thats on the HPI website.
but each time i have taken it out i have had a problem with it. so frustrating...
i know they are fiddly and i have ALOT to learn.
but F**K sake...
took it out today as we had a big bbq at work. 2 other work mates have nitros also.
we "were" going to race (work on a construction site, so good spot too)
got mine started, and in the last week whilst sitting in idle it seems to have a mind of it own. reving lots til i hit the breaks.
and it started doing it again. temperature was through the roof very suddenly (394 degrees farenhieght. so i shut it down pronto)
have tried tuning it. and watch the temp constantly.
now ive gotten home and gone to empty the tank (still 3/4 full as thats all i got through)
and i can hear bits ratttling around in the transmission.
am so frustrated as its a long weekend here and was wanting to take it out all weekend.
looks like il be pulling it apart and waiting2 weeks for new parts...
YAY!!!
are they always this tempermental???

Once you get into the tranny you might find that it is only a sees came loos or something! Also I would say that your trim nob was set to high and your throttle was staying open!
On the engine temps, have you sealed the motor yet?

RE: Arrgh! now what??
The only things that need to be sealed are the backplate and the base of the carb! Also, you have the pesky Kingstar carb with three adjustment screws, besides the idle screw, I would go ahead and make sure that the mid range needle screw is not bouncing around on you and going to lean or to rich! There are some threads about the carbs here somewhere. Again I am on my phone makes searching a little more difficult. The jist of the mid range is to seal it up and leave it alone! Hope this all makes sense!

I have found the links for you! This page covers both the carb and the engine! Don't mind the product bashing as I am sure you are having a good time with your engine.
There are pictures and instructions here!
This is a direct link starting the posting of the instructions you require.

RE: Arrgh! now what??
If you've only had it for a month and only run about 1 tank each weekend then your engine is not fully broken in yet. If you did any tuning I would go back to factory settings and go from there, you might need a few more tanks before it opens up and starts to breath normaly.
Defo seal it up just in case and get your nitro owning co-workers to give you a hand. No better source of help than someone who is right next to you when the problems occur.

RE: Arrgh! now what??
i did go through 10 tanks of fuel before opening it right up in break in.
and i have though about going back to factory setting on the carb.
might do that that this time round see how we go.
unfortunatley the 2 other guys at work are useful as a screen door on a submarine when it comes to nitros. hehe.
kinda like am a bit, but im getting there.

RE: Arrgh! now what??
well... pulled the transmission out today. was not what i was hoping for or expecting.
check the pics. theres a pic of all the teeth left over too.
any ideas as to why this would happen?
or is this a regular occurence...
should i just buy the stock parts?
pulled the pinion gear 26 tooth 77065#.
not sure on the other part yet.
have got some score/scratch marks on the inside of the trans cover.
will that be a problem?
would this type of problem be covered by warranty from HPI?
havent even put 5 litres through it.
bummer. was hoping ot was just a loose screw.

I have seen that happen with a high hp Picco and high geared cb-spur combo's the trans cant take that kind of power and high speed but I don't know why yours did that [sm=shades_smile.gif]

RE: Arrgh! now what??
ah right. hmmm...
you reckon its worth contacting hpi about it. im assuming one of them gave way,
and the pieces have moved around inside and shredded another.
have already ordered the replacements. so in about 2 weeks time should be running again.

RE: Arrgh! now what??
well shes all back together. didnt seal up the engine this time round. will do that soon.
replaced the spur gear and idle gear.
put a few other extras on just for looks like: Braided fuel lines, titanium turnbuckles, aliminium shocks.
will take it out this weekend and se how it goes. starting from scratch with the factory setting on the needle too.
