Just finished putting everything back together after upgrading my HL Tiger I from the RX 14 board to the RX 18 with the HL IR system. All things considerd it was not to difficult and was greatly aided by many generous postings here and the instruction link on the RCCOMMAND web site. The biggest difficulty was my lack of technical ability in soldering the small wires and plug connections. I do have two problems though. The first is the sound. When I first got everything running the sound was much lower in volume. Checked the volume control knob and it would decrease but not increase. Ran this way a few minutes and then all sound quit completely. All other functions still work. Checked all the wires and connections to do with sound and they are in good shape. I need some ideas of what to check next. Could the volume switch be bad? Please let me know if anyone has had a similar experience.
Second problem is the steering. Forward and reverse are good but it steers to the opposite side. Push lever right it goes left. Push lever left it goes right. I remember reading this in a previous post but have not been able to find it again.
Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

These may be helpful to have as they are RX-18 Wiring. The volumn control seems to be the sound issue. Will be checking some post over on another forum which has esier navigation. If I find an answer I will post a link.

goldminer,I completely agree with B/MAN.TWO of the leads must be cross-wired to the volume control, and one of them goes to ground, probably the
wiper of the volume control. What this would do is effectively short out the pre-amplifier stage and cause it to draw excessive current leading to failure.
Simply put, the volume control resistor drains current for the emitter or collector of the transistor circuit. The wiper of the volume control merely taps off
some of this voltage/current, but NEVERchanges the current drain to the amplifier transistor to any noticeable degree. If the ground lead is wired to the wiper erroneously, then any rotation of the grounded wiper would be the same as shorting out the transistor. You probably need a new RX-18 board, but find out from a known good unit the proper color coding before wiring it in. Best of luck in your quest, goldminer.

Thanks to all who responded! I do not think I could have messed up the wiring on the volume control as it was one of the few that actually pluged into the old board. All I did was unplug it and plug it in the new board.
Will try switching the motor plugs. So SIMPLE I can not believe I did not think of that!
Thanks again.

Hello All, I have wired a Pz3 NS&S to an RX-18 board. Mine too runs backwards, I followed the wire colors etc. I will switch them. My tank makes the sound when the motors are just bfore starting but they are stopped. Would the reverse polarity cause this?motors bad or tight? trim on transmitter does not help. When motors run audio starts making a screeching sound. I will reverse motors. They are the stock ones and will be replaced by the 3 to 1. It goes through start up ok just for info. I am not using a smoker. Thanks all.

Yeah motor wiring is probably backwards. Just went through that with my Tiger. Even had another tank set up just like it and still got the wires backward.

Thank you SAXONDOG! One of the RX-18 details you posted showed what the three wires going to the volume knob are. I hooked the right two together eliminating sond control and the sound works. Clearly shows that the volume control has gone bad. Did switch the motor plugs and solved the steering issue. Thanks to all who offered ideas and suggestions. I am back at getting "killed" by my 11 year old who is much better at tank battling than I.
The only question is what to do next!
Thanks again!

Hello All, My Panzer III has the rx-18 board All connections are good. Tank runs in right direction. Turrns correctly. No speed control though. At stop though I hear a whirring like the motors are trying to start. Trim will not get rid of it. No variable speed. Just one speed. Bad board ? Wires are connected correctly according to diagram. This was a non smoke sound version. Everthing from motors to transmitter is new.
Thanks for any assistance.

Ireally need to get rid of these motors. They are very noisy and they run rough compared to my 3 to 1 from Phil, There is an issue with the sound as well with this set up.
Ifound it. bad board.
