David I totally agree with you! I opened all the tanks and re plumbed them, I removed and replaced some of the hinges and may end up re-doing the rest. I appreciate all the extra work but on my next one I will probably request these things to be left to me. Oh yes, did you get the update to add one more bolt to the aft fuselage joint?

Oli,
CA Jets is Mar 25 -27. I plan to spend the week there starting the 22nd. So, just prior to the event is my deadline to do the maiden.
I am somewhat concerned with the direction FEJ has taken with this jet, in that it came with surfaces already hinged & mounted and the fuel tanks plumbed. These are things I really feel the builder/owner should have control of. I have already opened the fuel tanks and will re-do them to my liking, but the hinging is another matter. Not sure I want to cut them all out and start over. From what I can see they did a fairly decent job of installing them, but I have always replaced the hinges they provide with Robart pinned hinges, the quality/strength is better in my opinion.
I'll report on any other issues I come across, and as always, will appreciate your input.

I can hear it already! Someone's going to fly this jet "as is" with the fuel tanks already plumbed, get an air bubble(probably not due to the tank plumbing), flameout, crash landing and the screeching will begin
. So even though it's not officially from FEJ, let it now be known: If you don't make the effort to inspect & or redo the fuel tank plumbing on this jet before flight, WHATEVER HAPPENS IS YOUR FAULT![X(]No, I didn't get the update, but that's one I probably would have done on my own. Thanks for the info!

Well, that's only the case if they have never had an FEJ jet before, because if they had, they would know that you have to replace the FEJ stoppers anyway because they always leak... just like the gear...

Hey, the sun is actually up here now when I go to work *and* when I go home, and the snow is melting, so even leaking FEJ air system parts don't get me down - much...

Just use the "Block" tool. I have. The useless comments won't even show. Especially if we never "quote" them.
New Mod to the canopy:
Using a couple of HiTec thin wing servos I had laying around. No more huge cylinder attached to the fuse

But I might be able to make it to you in April.
The Chinese hinges are significantly weaker than the Robart hinges ( more brittle ). They cannot handle reliably over 100 oz-in of momentum. The Robart ones can handle 150 oz-in at least.
I did test this about 6 months ago in the workshop on my vice.
That could be fine if they would care about computing maximum the hinging momentum at the factory.

William,
The problem with the canopy locks is due to lack of an alignment blade or pin on the canopy to frame. Air pressure on the canopy could cause the locks to press in and out of registration. I fixed mine by just adding a small piece of G-10 to the frame just inside of the locking pin. See the photo. One top slot is done, the bottom slot isn't yet, see the large room for movement.
I am planning to add pilots. I'm going to adapt a couple of the 1/6 pilots to fit, I think.

Actually I was asking if you were keeping the air cylinder locks or converting to servos, I've already taken care of the alignment. So you will have servos to open/close and air to lock correct?

At the rate you're going, how about I just send you mine and you can finish them both?

I like the nose door mod!David S

No, I'm a bitter young man. I do have fun. In between building, flying, and sometime crashing jets, doing lots of UAV work, and fixing leaks in my FEJ landing gear (just spend an hour tracking down leaking fittings in my under-construction FEJ Rafale EDF last night as I watched Shawn White school the world in the half-pipe) I quite enjoy spinning up the FEJ guys with no sense of humor...

Hi Mr DJ
I got mine a few weeks ago, and it looks stunning!!! After flying the FEJ F-15 with two Jetcat P-160 SE, i will power my F-4 (Jolly Roger scheeme) with a pair of ATJ-120 Ti (12.5 kg thrust). I have tested them on the bench, and theese turbines looks really promising.
Say hello to James for me, and hope too see you both at Jetpower 2010 in Germany.

So you're a Jetcat man - those are excellent engines if they're on a military bird sneaking up on the enemy because they are so quiet no one can hear them
Now if you want to roar like a freakin' lion, the evo 160 is it, baby
Jet Power sounds like a plan; not right now, but a future plan. I'll tell James hello for you. I'll see you out there.
Peace
Mr DJ

Great info, can you describe the test (or make a little cartoon af the hinge and the alignment of the force you applied?)
And how did they fail? Was it the stock aluminum pop rivet axle or the hinge fingers?
Thanks in advance,

Hi David,
I think that they look a bit too big. But since they are so much nicer than the original ones, I guess that you can keep them.
Did you have to chop the legs to fit them ?

Nick,
Thanks. I'll be there!
Oli,
Yes, the pilot's legs had to go. They interfered with the nose steering servo in the retracted position. The RIO gets to keep his, for the time being
. Where did you get the pilots for your F-18F? Are they the same size as the BBI?
