This is one I was thinking of building .....but wasn't there a larger verson 120 or 160 size?

Yes, RC City kitted the 120 size. It had 925 squares and was done for a 4-stroke 1.20. Had glass fuse, plug in wings and pipe in the belly. Basically a scaled up version of the Desire 60 with those structural changes.

Is the larger Desire a directly scaled up version? I have a 60 kit with the fiberglass parts and wanted something larger, maybe an all wood kit (ie wood wings, rudder, and stab) could be an option.

That's what I was thinking somthing with about 76" - 78" WS. I've got a couple of new 160DZ's looken for a plane to be in!

I have a Desire 120 kit I acquired a couple of years ago. I would be willing to let go of it. In talking with Mike Dunphy, Ithink this one is a PAC kit based on the carbon rope fuse stiffeners. If you are interested let me know and I'll try to send some pics. I'm close enough to Muncie andcould drop it off with someone during the NATS. The wing cores are drilled for the wing tube socket.

I've been enjoying your Desire article in FM. The model is definitely very clean and graceful. In retrospect, how do you feel about the design - is there something you would change if there was a Desire 2?

By the way, are the cores and top deck still available from someone?

Replacement cores are listed on Eureka's website...I was gonna copy my top deck and chin cowling but saw a post where they are going to be available again...I won't copy mine as not to step on anyone's toes...

I got one which is framed up from a local individual who said it flies very well...

We will be making a new plug for the chin cowl and that need to come first with a few other things... The mold where in storage and need alot of cleaning and re waxing and buffing which we are working on now. That is why I really don't want the cat out of the bag about other things in the works right now. There are some more plans and boxes to sort thru to get things in place and I have to finish up a build for ORNL/Department of Energy.

OMG.. FINALLY!! I was 16 or was it 15.. a library assistant TA gig I worked my way into at explorer junior high in evertt washington... I could read hours and hours of r/c rags at my becon call.. One article and plane I drooled over then before going into pattern myself was the DESIRE!! For YEARS i could not remember that plane though I remember what it looked like and always wanted to find it and build it. OMG.. I FOUND this thread on a chance wim..

Looks like Mike was ahead of the game on this plane. I am not an expert here, but everything I see nowadays, looks like it.

I think he always has been!

What I find is particularly unusual about the Desire for its time (aside from the over square aspect ratio), is it's flat bottom. I think in the '80's there were several flat top designs but few flat bottom ones. The desire almost seems to have reversed the fuse concept and putting the pipe above the wing rather than below it is also a nice touch - DH Calypso style as Mike puts it.

I think a curved fuse bottom is mandatory nowadays in F3A 2+2.

Mike, any particular thoughts on insulation material these days for the lite-ply floor in the pipe area?

Hi All,

We are almost done with the ORNL project and have to get the daughter married off next weekend and then a quick vacation.. The wife goes on another deployment the 2nd week of July so I will have more time then to get all the parts worked out.. I have been cleaning molds for Desire 120 and the 61 and a have the plans also now.

I will make a post when we have some of the 61 parts ready and when the 1st glass/carbon fuse for the 120 is out of the mold.

It has been a long slow process !

We will keep you up to date.
