FADEC and A123's

Gasper

Could not wait until September for the new 90 so I have bought a second hand one, can you tell me if your FADEC can use a three cell A123? or what is the maximum voltage that it can take off the charger? I know a two cell LiPo is nominaly 8.4, but a three cell A123 would be 10.8 fresh off the charger.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

EDIT: Can someone tell me where you get the software programme from for the turbine to connect to my PC, can't seem to find it on the Jet Munts web site.

EDIT: Its not on the Jet Munt site its on the FADAC site.

EDIT: Also found that the FADEC is able to take 12 volts as the 5.4 version, I have version 6.0 is that still capable of taking 12 volts?

RE: FADEC and A123's

Mike,

I have worked with Gaspar previously when I first started selling A123's. The problem with a 3 cell A123 does not lye with the ECU, it is a problem with the valves (fuel and propane) and the starter motor. Those are the reason (at least on the Jet Central engines) that you can not use a 3 cell A123.

Unless there have been updates to these components, I believe this information is still correct.

Thanks for the feedback Chad, will await with interest to see what Gasper has to say.

User manual say 7,4V only.

The fadec can use 12V in a 12V systems, with 12V compatible starter, valves, etc. On the M90 the voltage should be of 7,4V. You can use LiIons if you don't like Lipos.

Gasper

Thanks for the reply, but I have a bunch of A123's and rearly see them as the way forward on all turbine applications, don't like LiPo's or LiIon, looks like I will have to get a regulator of some kind, or change the starter and valves, shame the JetCat valves are rated at 6volts, but take A123's once the ECU mod has been done to allow the use of A123's, and I don't think they put a regulator in the ECU just a heat sink.

What about two cell A123?

I'm using them on an older version Fadec in my Jet Central Eagle and its working fine.

RE: FADEC and A123's

A two cell A123 will be 6.6volts nominal this may be a little low for the ECU which requires 7.4volts minimum, is this too far below the threashold for reliable running?

RE: FADEC and A123's

I tested the 160 using 6,6V and it started OK, never have tested the M90, but I will borrow a battery and test this week.

we are talking of gas start engines here, kerostart engines need 7.4V.

RE: FADEC and A123's

Thanks for the responce Gasper, but my 90 is a Kero start, so I assume the kero plug needs the higher voltage?

Is it possible to modify the ECU to give the right voltage to the valves and starter, with a three cell A123?

RE: FADEC and A123's

The reason for asking all these questions is that I have bought a second hand 90 and was only getting a couple of starts per charge with a 2500 two cell LiPo, upon investigation and looking closer at the FADEC and wiring I came to the conclusion that the previous owner had replaced the main cable's to the turbine with a home made extension, the cables used are HD servo cables which IMO will not carry sufficient current to the turbine for the purpose of starting and powering the Kero start plug, so this morning I am going to solder up a new main cable in 12g and see if this makes a difference, will report back what I find.

Lots of difference, even starts quicker, as I think the Kero plug is getting more current with the bigger gauge wire, now all I have to do is fly it.
