Hey Randy,
Thanks again for an awesome job flying the plane on Sunday. I found your posting so I figured I'd upload some more pictures for the masses. As always, more pictures and information can be found on our website:

In the lab

Flight testing the UAV

The whole package, the big day

Well, that's the brief summary. Everything worked basically as intended. More pictures and detail on the website.

Enjoy!

This time the UAV was just flying around, no payload was carried. Next time the UAV will carry a 500 MHz single board computer, two cameras, a pitot-static system, angle roll rate sensors, linear accelerometers (> artificial horizon), and an infrared thermometer. And 5 antennas to carry all that data.

As to the fact that the rocket isn't made out of metal.....
Believe me, I'd love to make an aluminum rocket sometime. But our sponsors (largely NASA, TSGC, and our school), our insurance, and our launch site all dictate that we follow NAR rules.

http://www.nar.org/NARmrsc.html
NAR Rule number 1:
1. Materials. I will use only lightweight, non-metal parts for the nose, body, and fins of my rocket.

Ditch NAR and join TRIPOLY they allow EX http://www.balls17.com/ If anything you should make the venture yourself !!! Or build me some electronics and I will fly them for you !!! I just lost my flight computer guy.

rungewo,
How did you pilot the UAV and what was the altitude when it seperated from the rocket?
Have you ever tried to attach rockets to RC planes? I want to attach 2 'F' size rockets to my plane and ignite them at altitude.
What do you think?
