Default MVVS .45 or .49??

Hi Guys,

My LHS has sold MVVS in the past and still has an MVVS RC engine on the shelf. He has two empty boxes, one marked .49 and one marked .45. We think the engine in question came from one of those boxes, but are not sure which one! The engine case has no size marking. On the bypass there is a ~1/4" dia. spot where the size marking was milled off.

Is there an easy way to determine the displacement of the engine without disassembly? I can post pics if necessary.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi, Jim.

Those with the 'blank' circle were mostly .45 engines.
The .49 engine usually had a 'figure 8' machined there.

Most .49 engines had a green anodized head (.45 engines had a red anodized head), but that was before most engines got the blue anodized head (and prop-driver).

The only way to be sure is to measure the stroke.

The .45 had a 19.6 mm stroke, while the larger engine had a 21 mm stroke.
You can measure the stroke through the glow-plug hole; no need do disassemble.

The 45 case was just milled, whilst the 49 had the 8 punched in. At least with the engines I received from MVVS. That system perfectly identifies which is which.

Thanks for the replies.

This engine has the red head and the plain, blank milled circle, so is most likely a .45. I will check the stroke, to be sure.

Regards,
Jim

Hi!
Yeah! That's a 7,5cc (.45) engine! And be sure it has got a 8mm carb for best performance . There are also C4 racing bearings (WIB, Swiss made )available from MVVS for all .40 engines on the market except Rossi. Those will improve rpm.

I have a .49 "Green Head" with no marking on the crankcase at all, just a milled circle. It was a very early example.

Might be worth a lot if you can hold it for another 50 years!

Hi Pe

I have the feeling the engine will still be in good running order in 50 years ... but I will not be

Sadly, the .45 has a 7mm carb; will check the greenhead .49 soon.

The 7mm carb on a .45 is an excellent match. The larger sized engines  were not meant to scream at high rpm.
