MVVS .49 break in
Hello, Sorry if this has already been asked but I couldn't find it. I just bought a new MVVS .49 with tuned silencer. I have always used Wildcat 10% fuel and have had great luck with it as far as longevity of motors. I think it is only 16% oil (80% syn 20% castor). Is this okay for break in and running or should I do something else?

RE: MVVS .49 break in
Z,
This is an engine you will enjoy. The break-in instructions that come with it are rather abbreviated; 3 1/2 lines... Break it in as described in [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/Tapered%2DBore_Engine_Break%2Din_%2D_Upgraded/m_1850473/tm.htm]this RCU thread[/link], including the percentage of oil for the procedure. It is imparative that you never use any less than 20% (I recommend that half of it is Castor) oil in this engine, under any conditions. Most fuel manufacturers make a fuel that contains the correct amounts of oil. PowerMaster makes fuel for control-line with 22% oil. If the fuel available to you contains only 16% (Byron?) and only 20% of that is Castor, the fuel as it is does not comply. You will have to get some Klotz BeNOL, or Baker's AA (Sig) Castor oil and add the correct proportion of it to the fuel that you use. One of these brands should be available at your LHS. You can use 10% nitro, but you must first add a single head shim (two in all), under the head. You can buy one locally and you could use up to 15% nitro with it. When replacing the head (with the extra shim), verify the sleeve ports remain aligned with those of the cylinder casing. |
RE: MVVS .49 break in
Thanks a lot for the info. My LHS only carries wildcat, omega and cool power fuels. The wildcat states 16% oil and it is my understanding the cool power and omega is 17%. I am about to finish a gallon anyway so would one of these fuels work if I drop down to 5% nitro and add the correct amount of oil?

RE: MVVS .49 break in
Z,
...Then don't get another fuel. The CoolPower is out of the question because it is all synthetic, but the WildCat is a good fuel to start with. But you must add degummed Castor oil (Sig/Baker's AA, Klotz BeNOL, or Morgan CleanCastor), to a balance of 20% oil (25% for break-in). Can't get any? Wrong answer! You live in the US of A. There is nothing you cannot get enough of! Find another hobby shop, or mail-order some. With less oil your engine will simply not run properly, and/or may sustain damage that is not covered by the warranty. You can send a PM to Martin (dieseldan in RC-Universe) from Winter Park, FL, to ask him where he gets his Castor oil. |
RE: MVVS .49 break in
I didnt mean to indicate I couldn't get any oil, I just wanted to make sure one of these fuels were a good start and I understand adding the castor. Thanks again for help

RE: MVVS .49 break in
You had better do as Dar says. He will know and "get" you if you don't do right. Seriously I have several MVVS engines and another as soon as Dar gets it to me, they run really well if taken care of properly.
