Evolution 45 GX EI unit
I have a 45 GX that I bought just over 2 years ago. The EI unit has gone bad. I want to put the newer EI unit (from the GX2) on it. What other steps do I need to take besides changing the prop hub and going to a Li-Po battery?
Thanks |
RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
You will either need to fit a different plug cap that suits the old Brisk plug (14mm thread), OR a new jug that has the 10mm thread for the CM6 plug, OR a 14mm to 10mm reducer.

Pe,
Can you tell me where I could find a 14 mm to 10 mm reducer? I just get blank stares when I ask at the auto parts stores here. LOL. Also, if I can't go that route. How hard will it be to change out the actual cap? Thanks |
RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
MVVS has reducers, and I made a couple myself. Still have two available, made from original UR17 spark plugs.
I know of some ignitions, that are/were extremely sensitive to changes to the high voltage cirquit, and are not to be messed with. The completely earth encased modern ignitions can play havoc with changes, so I am reluctant to answer unless backed up by experience. (none this moment, I fear) Having said this, I have no idea how much tampering the MSR ICU ignition will allow. |
RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
On a differnet tangent, is there an ignition unit to replace my GX2's? I am tired of having the engine backfire every time the ignition is powered on. It gets alot of looks and I dont particularly like having to explain the spark fire sequence. I dont flood my engines and dont like the feature(for me). Not a fan of having to clock the prop before I turn it on either.

RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
You can turn the feature Off by setting a jumper???
BTW It is not a bad habot to set the prop in bottom position when the plane is idle. For inverted engines, it has the advantage, that the carb will not pump when moving the prop a little. If you bump the prop to compression to and fro, it will activate the carb and get some mixture pumped into the engine, so you do not neet the choke to start first flip. |
RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
So, whats the procedure for deactivating the sparks?

RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
Pe,
Would it be possible for me to purchase one of those reducers from you? I am having a very difficult time locating one from the LHS here. If I DID decide to replace the cylinder head, would I need to go through the break-in procedure again? Would I need to replace the ring on the piston? Thanks |

RE: Evolution 45 GX EI unit
Pe,
I sent you a PM regarding the reducers. Thanks |

Is this you?
