Default AirField 70MM Brushless F-16 Electric Ducted Fan

Anybody here flown this plane? I'm curious if it's a capable thrower/gearless lander for a beginner jet flier. Stable at low speeds?
Durable enough for belly landing on grass?
Size of the motor isn't listed. ??

Thanks

These planes are relatively new so you may not get much input here for a few months.

However the design is very similiar to other planes.

Have you flown EDF's before?

EDF's may be a bit different than what you are used to.

Since there is no prop pushing air over the control surfaces their flight characteristics take a bit of getting used to...

Particularly at takeoff and landing.

My advice is to forgo either of those planes and look to something with a bit wider wing to fuselage ratio and wheels.

e.g. the EF2000 or the Rafale.

Not that either of the two planes you are looking at are problematic, but the wheeled planes would give you the opportunity of practicing landings onto pavement before attempting a grass landing with the F-16.

The jets slow down well but they hit a point where they feel "mushy" ( for lack of a better word ). This is the point where the control surfaces are loosing effectiveness. After that the nose will drop somewhat quickly if power is not restored or maintained.

This works against the type of "float in to landing" types approach you want for grass.

They do come in nose high in a fairly scale like manner.

I orderd the F-35 with retracts after a shop owner told me the F-35 is more stable and has bettergliding tendencies.

I'm thinking of glassing or simply spraying the bottom and wing areas with polyurethane to minimize handling and flight damage.

Are there any comparable planes made of more durable material? SEPO foam compared to EPS/EPO? Fiberglass?

For what it's worth:

I just now got mine. (This Airfield Thunderbird F16).... I opened the carton and inspected everything just a few minutes ago.
Everything (and I do mean everything) appears to be FMS, only it has Airfield printed on it instead. (even the Pilot's name is the same).
Other than that, the plane is done exactly the same as an FMS version of the same. (from all that I can see w/o tearing something apart).
It has full landing gear, with stearable nosewheel, AND Rudder.
This stands to reason, because this plane it the larger F16 Version; not the smaller one. (I don't think the smaller FMS-F16 has L-Gear or Rudder).

No, I'm not quite ready for this plane myself either, but eventually Spring will turn to Summer,,, eh?
And, Thunderbird F16's have a nasty habit of disappearing OFF the Shelves Really FAST.
This is NOT gunna happen to me yet AGAIN; hence I took a chance; I'm glad I did.

I'm impressed that it appears every bit the same as FMS. But no, I've not flown it yet; I'm just relaying what I see.

I just received the Airfield Tiger F-16 and immediately built it. After getting it all set up I put the battery in and adjusted the elevators etc. I gave it a little throttle in the garage and the speed controller caught fire. Needless to say I am very disappointed.

Wow! The F-16 Fly's Great, Even By Hand Launching It.

In The Flight, I Only Needed 2 Clicks Off Up Elevator For A Straight And Level Flight. The Nitroplanes.com AirField 70MM F-16 Even Fly's Nice And Stalbe At Half Throttle Which Is Where I Flew It Most Of The Video.

Using Up 1900mAH Out The 2200mAH 4 Cell Lipo Battery That Come With The Kit.

I Set My Timer For 3 Half Minutes And Went Almost Into A 6 Minute Flight Using Flight Manage On The Radio.

Why Go Fast When Your Having Some EDF Fun.

Another 5/5 5* Stars On New The Nitroplanes.com AirField 70MM F-16.

This is a nice plane. Larger than I had expected.

The battery compartment is larger than the supplied pack.

I'm wondering if I can stuff a 3200 to a 3850 mAh 14.8v pack in there. It may require a bit of cutting under the forward hatch point.

The plane may also present the possiblity of upgrading with the Aluminum Nitroplanes fans ( PLEASE RESTOCK THOSE PUPPIES! ) for more power and speed.

Nice Videos flyboytha1 (still trying to figure out how to pronounce).. keep up the vids..

Anyway , my question is, which airfield edf do you like better?

The F-4 or the F-16?

Which one seems faster?

More stable?

I want one of the two..

Which one would you get?

Thanks.!!

hairlesshippy,

The F-4 Is More FASTER

The F-16 Is More Stalbe. And Just A Little More Forgiving.

One last question..

Would you recommend changing out electronics with my own receiver prior to even flying it once? How is the transmitter/receiver that comes with it?

What do you use?

Thanks for your help..

I use my own transmitter and receiver on mine.

The receiver and transmitter provided are fine, ( check them out completely first! ) but offer no exponential, etc.

Also the provided receiver seems to be more of a "park flyer" type receiver.

Park Flyer receivers typically have lesser effective ranges than "full range" receivers used on larger aircraft.

Full range receivers for RC normally use standard 39" length 1/4 wave antennas.

The Park Flyers use 1/8 wave antennas instead, e.g. 19.5"

They max out around 800 - 900 ft or so.

There is nothing wrong with that, but you want to keep the plane close in, and EDF jets can get out pretty fast.

I had a Miglet fall out of the sky once when it went out of range with a Park Flyer receiver. I hadn't realized that I went out that far.

I would also recommend running the antenna away from the electronics.

You can run the antenna along a wing for best range and minimal interference.

There are NO problems putting turns in the wire, so you can run the antenna out the LE of the bottom of the wing, the along the outer portion back and if you still have excess wire along the trailing edge. From an electrical standpoint, this poses no problem.

If You Have Your Own Reciever I Would Us It. The Servo's Are Alright To Stay In, I've Never Had One Bad Yet

I Use My DX6i Or DX7 On Everything And 6200 Or AR9000 Reciever's, There Full Long Range Reciever's.

Oh Yeah Cool Video .

Yes, I'd say it's a Famous jet also as you can see in the pic below, the ESC clearly states Famous. Now, I don't normally open up an RTF jet or plane when I get one but as you can see in the pics someone got lazy on the assembly line as the shield wasn't totally glued down. No matter, as I had to take it off to hook up the motor wires and a servo. Why do I have this mental picture of two Chinese ladies on the assembly line saying "No my job!!!"? Well everything else went together just fine (better than the F-35 with a faulty ESC yesterday) so there aren't any complaints other than the dimple on the nose cone. My last nitro jet (F-4) had serious nose damage for no reason as it sat in it's own compartment within the box.

Anyone have a recommended throw for ail, ele and rud???
