RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Wel the instructions arent as bad as My CMP lancair witch only came with a Blueprint but I found reading a blueprint easy and alot more informative. Only thing these instruction really lack is Servo information. would be nice if they had that But i can live with them.:)
The worst instructions i had were for my fFirst gasser The League Extra 330L the book showed cartoon drawings of how certain parts went and the rest was figure it out. Have to Check out the Variant you have . I have all the add ons and expansions for G3.5. I'll look for your variant:) Spoilerons i think would crash this plane Not desighned for using Aeilerons as flaps that would be an accident waiting to happen. I'll just use a y connector.[sm=thumbup.gif] |

ORIGINAL: top242 hi, the asp52 four strokes , ist good option for this plane? Thanzs! The .52 four stroke is about the equivalent of a .32 2C, so it would be fairly scale like. A 2C .40 would be better or a 2C 46 turns it into a powerhouse. |

Update to my Build of this plane with the Saito FA62a Engine. Come to a stop have to wait for a Turbomuffler that will fit it. So i'm gonna give it a week and see What happens. Getting a muffler for this engine to fit in the cowl is a bit of a problem. Other then that the plane has gone together pretty smoothly better then alot of ARF's ive done, everything fits amazing.
The wing Trusses that go between the wings are splayed out a little Don't understand why they couldnt have made them straight but it might be that the bottom wing is a Tad Shorter then the top, Maybe that is why. Still think they could have made them straight up and down. Hmm a very intresting Mystery i guess only the manufacture knows. I think the wheels are a bit on the small side might get bigger ones. The tail wheel sucks IMO but it's better then nothing i guess. probably will change that too. Other then that it's pretty Cool Kinda grows onya as you put it together i thought the orange was Herendous at first. but i'm starting to like it more and more as i get closer to finishing. Should be highly visable in the Sky.:) |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Yeah I didn't bother with the tail wheel at all.
I believe I also opted for larger wheels as well. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
What tail wheel setup did you use? I have been looking at them on Towerhobbies web site. Also looking at differnt wheels the ones on it are defienetly to small.
|
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
I used one of these: [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLKN8&P=7]Click Me![/link]
How do you like the price? |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Thats perfect i will be getting one of them. i cant stand the way the one that came with it works. Have any pics of how yours is mounted looks a little confusing hope it comes with some kind of instruction.
Cant beat that price:) |

Here is what it looks like installed. The picture is self explanatory. Missing from the pic is the smaller plastic cylinder which goes on the rudder itself holding the wire. After everything is in place, deflect the rudder fully and cut any wire beyond 1/3" or so past the small cylinder. I buy these things by the dozen as I've used them on planes from .40's up through my Giant Scale U-Can-Do. One other benefit of this tail gear; the plane sits more level. This causes it to yaw less at run up. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Linkadrip,
I just ordered one of these and plan on using the same motor. I was wondering if the engine could be mounted sideways so the muffler would fit better. I have a 40 size Ultimate that I mounted a 2-stroke in sideways in and it works out well. It looks like a nice plane, I had been wanting to get the orange one but didn't have the money, and luckily when I got the money for it it went on sale. Does NitroPlanes send out any shipping confirmation or tracking numbers? Good luck with your plane, hope it flys well. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Yes, you get an e-mail with "Nitro Model R C Planes" in the subject line.
It comes via Yahoo, so make sure that your Anti-spam filter doesn't catch it. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Thanks for the heads-up on the e-mail opjose. I reset my e-mail, hope I didn't miss it but only put the order in on Friday so I don't think it would have gone out quite yet.
|
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Yes you will get the confirmation as opjose says. great picture i will be buying more then one tail gear since i have several planes that need a better tail gear. I looked up the Installation of the tail gear in the manual that the gear goes to Cap 260 i think and it gives a pretty good explination. but you picture shows it much bettter. thank you very much appriciate that alot:).
I dont see any reason why the engine cant be mnounted to the side or at a 45 if you prefer even straight up. if one want to cut the hole inthe top of the cowl. Just take some inginuity. I thought about mounting at a 90 degree but decided i wanted to make things difficult as usuall for myself soi mounted the engine inverted. So now i'm waiting on a 90 degree Fitting for the exahust from Horizon. then i should be able to complete it. Probably will fly it withthe tail gear that came with it maybe. But i'm going to order the new gear As soon as possable just casue this tail gear sucks. wouldnt be so bad if it was't So flimsy. I'm sure the plane will fly Great just have to rember its not a TwisT.:) |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Thanks linkadrip, gt my confirmation yesterday, which I thought was great. The Great Planes tail wheel is great, it is what comes with the Super Skybolt. I have been looking for one in the 60 size but can only find the larger sizes now.
I am going to mount my engine sideways so the exhaust exits to the bottom. |

RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
My plane came today. It seems pretty nice for the money but looks like it will need a little extra glue and reinforcement in a couple of spots.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy from NitroPlanes again. The order processing and shipment was quick and the plane arrived in perfect shape. I should get it done just as the weather starts to break here, I hope! |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Well i'm almost finished with mine. But i'm waiting on a fuel dot and some other goodies for it, before i can finish it. Ordered 3 tail wheels Setups for my planes. I'm sure they will work alot better then the stock ones on my planes.
Waiting for a fueler to mount in the cowl can't fuel it upside down all the fuel gets pushed out the exhaust. when the plane is right side up the vent tube in the tank is pointed toward the top of the tank upside down and it's submerjed in the fuel. plus its a pain to pull the fuel line off the carb to fuel the tank. I just hope that when the plane is flow inverted the Fuel doesn' cut the pressure from the exhaust off. Causing it to die But so far i havent had any trouble like that with my other tanks. But i never tried to fill them up upside down eighther. One thing to make sure is that the Control rods that are going to the flight controls are the right length. Seems one is shorter then the other and the one for the rudder on mine didnt come out in the fuse as far as the one for the elevator. all thats left is the tail wheel Control linkages for the wings oh and bigger wheels the wheels that came whith it are to small i think, but i'm not using the Wheel pants eighther so that may be why it looks funny. So i'm gonna try some 3 inch wheels on it. and a pilot for the cock pit have to have a pilot.:D |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
I started assembling mine last night and so far everything seems to be going well. I know what you mean about the wheels, they are small. I fly off of a grass field so I imagine I might have problems with them.
I think that I am going to upgrade the stock hardware on mine. It looks kind of weak. I can't do to much with it now as I haven't ordered the engine and am waiting on the wing servos to come in. |

I fuel the plane upright with this setup. I will also often install a filter between the filler and the carb. Works great, less filling. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Looks intresting, Never seen anything like that before. the link doesnt work. Is there another place to view that item??
Whats it called maybe i can find it on that web site the link leads to. But i get an error on that page but maybe from the home page i can do a search for it and find it that way.:) |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Try this: [link=http://www.airborne-models.com/index.asp]CLICK ME![/link]
When it comes up on the lower left under "Airplane accessories" click on "Fueling Parts" then "View". You'll see the link for the filler. It comes in different colors to match your cowl too. |
RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
Thanks i found it:) Thats pretty cool A very simple device for fueling. Just mount it to the cowl and plug in the fuel lines to the back and the fuel is looped through very Clever.:)

RE: Nitro Models Pitts-40 Special Design
I just received mine. I bought the Orange version.
I haven't dug into it too deep yet, just reading over the instructions (what there are of them) and getting ready to outfit the flight gear. I know this is probably mundane, but what servos did you people arrive at using. I'm particularily interested in the aileron servos. They look like micro sized. I want to order the servos, but I want to get the right ones. Ones that'll work well, won't strip gears too easily, etc.. Recommendations requested. TIA Lyndon |

I want to order the servos, but I want to get the right ones. Ones that'll work well, won't strip gears too easily, etc.. The larger the servo you use, the lesser the chance of a stripped gear. Don't assume that metal gear will be better either. Plastic does just fine and is less prone to wear, which causes centering problems on MG servos. Get out a ruler and measure the servo cutout on the plane. Look up the servo measurements and opt for a servo that my be either the same size or 1-5 mm larger ( you can always file out the opening a bit. ). Try to make the ailerons as flexible as possible when you install them. If you've done a few ARF's you should have already developed a good technique for this. Leaving a bit more spacing typically results in better flexibility, and since the control surfaces are fairly shallow ( not wide ) flutter is not an issue. You may also replace the CA material with Dubro stuff with the oval cutout in the center, or cut an oval yourself. This gives the hinge a little more flexibility and helps reduce binding and battery drain. |

TIA Lyndon So if you do Change the tail wheel Gear make sure you get the tail gear wheel close as possable to the rudder. After messing up i just cut the wire that goes to the tail and made it a caster type wheel think it will work but its not connected to the rudder anymore. Still have to hook up my linkages and mount the control horns for the Wings. getting closer to done. i'll take some pictures of my screw up so you can see what i mean about the tail wheel. [:'(] I have 2 more i bought For other planes wont make that mistake again. There great tail gear though very impressed now my Twist's will get one but gonna be a lot more carefull how i go mounting and mke sure the piviot point is as close to the rudder as possable. |
