Default Bearing shields

Hi Bax:
I have recieved new bearings for my O.S. 46FX from Boca Bearings. They have the shields on both sides. On the FX the rear bearing has none and the front has one to the front. Should I remove the shields an if so,what is the safest way to do this.
Thanks
Bob

You can remove them, if you wish. The "safest" way to remove the shields would be to carefully pry it out. You need something with a point, like an icepick, and then work it under the groove that retains the shield. Make sure you don't damage any bearing balls or the ball retainer. It's a bit of work do to, but it can be done.

If your fuel has enough oil in it, you don't need to remove the shields. O.S. states that fuel with no less than 18% oil content by volume is required. Ideally, your fuel should contain castor oil, which will help it if it runs a bit hot and will also help prevent some corrosion. The oil should be at least 25% or more castor oil for it to do any good.

Thanks Bax.
I use 15% Omega an I usually add 1oz. of castor to the jug.Is that enough do you think?
