Default OS 46FX - starts backwards

I have an OS46FX running with APC 12.25" x 3.75" prop and fuel containing 5%Nitro, 13%synthetic and 2%castor. The plug is O.S.#8

4 out of 5 times this engine starts the wrong way. It does not matter which way its flicked, it still starts backwards most of the time.

My questions are:

AA Is it bad for the engine.
BB Is there something wrong with the combo I am using.

The engine is mounted on a light airframe, the "Limbo Dancer" and performs flawlessly, once it gets going. Its very easy starting, except for the fact that it wants to start backwards.

thanks and best regards

Default Me too

I also have an Os 46 fx and have the same problem with it starting up backwards often. Otherwise runs great. Using the same fuel as in the TT 46 and GMS 47's. Only the OS does it. Any Ideas for us?

Default I have an OS 46 SF the same way...

It doesn't hurt anything that I know of, and usually a blip of throttle turns it around.

Old-school trick... while it's spinning backwards at idle, *carefully* give a gentle
squeeze of the hub/spinner between thumb and forefinger. It will kick and run forward.

Ok... maybe that's not good advice for some of ya.
Kids, or lawsuit happy people... don't try that. It could kill you, or even worse

Tip to keep it from happening... always?

Always start it with the starter, instead of hand-propping.
I know... they start so well, first flip always, that I hate to do it, too.

Default OS 46FX - starts backwards

I have seen the same thing from my OS engines when I hand flip them most of the time I use a starter. A starter cures the problem.

Krazy,

Usually, if a model 2-stroke engine tends to run backwards when hand-flipped, it's been a bit over-primed. You might also have a plug that's a bit too "hot" and is setting off the fuel/air mixture early. We'd suggest an OS #8 or #A3 plug, if you're not already using one.

Default OS 46FX - starts backwards

Usually a flooded or overprimed engine will run backwards when flip started.

Default OS 46FX - starts backwards

both my engines love to fire up and run backwards, in fact my .40fx engine fired up backwards with my starter and broke the shaft that connects the spinner cup to the motor. Anyways, my trick to get the engine running the right way is to either open up the throttle all the way, or put your finger half way over the carb and open the throttle. Nowyou'd think this would choke the engine and run it even richer but it works, be careful though to not cover the entire carb because you can create a hydraulic lock in the engine, not only will this damage the engine, it will really hurt your finger.
