Default tuned pipe muffler

Hi,
I have a 46 and 61 OS FX engines, and I was wondering if it is advisable to use tuned pipe muffler or not? And if I use it anyway, will that produce more power or not? What is the maximum length of a tuned pipe I can use?

Thank you,

Default RE: tuned pipe muffler

Either engine can be fitted with a tuned pipe, but the power increase may not be as much as expected. The engines are not ported specifically for tuned-pipe use. A free-flowing muffler or short pipe will do about as well.

On the .46, you'd want the pipe length, measured through the center of the manifold and pipe, to be about 13"-14" and tuned from there. The .61 would be about 16" and tuned from there.

There is no one pipe length that can be given to you. It's determined by your engine, prop, and fuel.

When you tune the pipe, start the engine, lean to peak, let it run there a bit to warm up the pipe system, tach it, and then kill the engine. Shorten the header length by 1/4". Repeat the process of start, lean, tach, kill. Keep shortening the length until you shorten the pipe and see no change in RPM. Leave it there and then fly. Listen carefully. You'll likely need to shorten the pipe a bit so that the engine comes onto the pipe in the air as it unloads.

Do not try to tune the pipe by sliding it up until you get to peak. "Tromboning" it won't give you a good set. It won't be the same the next time you run the engine.
