.40 LA engine
 

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to read my post. To begin I would like to explain how the engine acted when first purchased. I was able to pull fuel into the carburetor by putting a finger over the muffler and turning the crankshaft counter clock wise.

I have since changed the backplate , which didn't come with a gasket when I received it , and also I replaced the cylinder head which had the thin metal gasket installed. The muffler sustained a gash in it on one crash but I have block up the opening with silicon.

Please tell if I need any new parts for this engine or tell me if this is normal wear and tear and I shouldn't worry about it not holding pressure. I also made a gasket out of silicon and paper for the backplate.

Your note didn't state what "normal wear and tear" is that you're asking about.

If the engine won't draw fuel when it's choked (throttle wide open), then there's a pressure leak somewhere. There should be noticeable suction when you open the throttle wide, put your finger over the carb, and turn the prop in the normal running direction. You should also have good compression feel.

If debris got into the engine when it crashed, and managed to be run through the engine, then the clearances could have eroded enough to reduce the pumping action of the engine.

Thanks for responding , the engine runs horribly , and after taking a closer look I found a hair line crack in the crank shaft. Do you know where I can purschase the gasket for the backplate , or can I use the .46LA gasket instead? Both engines use the same back plate to my knowledge.

Sorry for taking so long to say thank you, I already ordered the gasket suggested for the .46LA and I also ordered the crankcase.
