OS 160FX is this normal?
 

I have an OS 160FX with a Perry VP30 and it runs really well with no adjustment to the pump at all. I did have the turn the low end needle in to the point of only being just over one turn out from being fully closed. My engine seems to change tone like it's four stroking when I reduce the throttle from a cruise flight to 1/4 throttle or so when I slow down. It idles and transitions great and the top end is just a little rich. Does this sound typical or does it sound like the mid range might be a little rich?

If the engine runs well at all throttle settings, we'd not worry about a thing. As long as it's set to be rich of peak RPM, you're OK.

I was wondering about the 160 FX on the bearings. I've heard through a friend that he had been told that the bearings do not hold up past 50-75 tanks of fuel. This information came about at a time my friend had two 160 FX engines and one of which had shelled the bearings and ruined the engine at which point he replaced the damaged parts along with installing new stainless bearings and then didn't even bother to wait for problems with the second engine and went ahead and replaced them also. So, my question is what is the straight dope on this? Is it an issue or just some isolated incidences? I've read a few strands where some people elude to installing stainless bearings.....no explaination connected.

If the engine gets sufficient lubrication and care, the bearings should have a good life. You do need to flood the engine with a good after-run product to protect the bearings against corrosion. A few drops won't do it, you'll need an ounce or so.

Stainless steel bearings are soft than iron bearings.
I would recommend a good afterun oil too, after a time you'll find a new gold painted bearing.
