I just volunteered to make 60--- 18" rubber powered boats for kids this summer. :D
I went thru a quart of lite weight spackle to fill all the dings & knots in the 2 x 4 hulls.
Calling them wood studs is pushing the term, SELECT.
Soo. No boat & motor questions till they are done. [:o]

You guys are the best thing since money.

Welllllllll, let's see them!
Here's a few of some rubber band powered outriggers that were built at a challenge at the `03 IMPBA Internat's. It was funny watching a bunch of grown men building and tweaking these boats.
We got a bag with the contents in them. You could use anything that you wanted as long as it was in the bag including the bag. You could remove pieces but not add to them. Painting or otherwise personalizing them was fine.
I had the fastest boat but Ernie LaFleur won for distance.
The rubber band and prop assembly were standard airplane parts.
Mine is on the far right. I broke the sponson dowel, that's why it's offset.

They were a blast! Mark McCray of the Ford Model Boat Club got them from somewhere, I don't know off-hand what the price was on them but it seems like they were around $3.00 each. My son spent a lot of time helping kids construct theirs as my Dremel and a lot of other tools came up MIA for a few hours.

Hi Ron.

This is the basic boat parts before painting & drilling for the 6 cleat screw eyes. 1/8" dowels locate the deck houses. 5 rectangles are cargo hatch covers. 12" piece with free flight rubber is the motor for 30' runs. The prop is a Octura # 2060 plastic.

Neat when 5 or so boats go at it. :)

The ones that I showed above, some of the entrants had cordless drills to wind theirs up.

We have a Volunteer, usually a senior, do the cordless drill windups. No kids act up or overwind the props.

reminds me of when I built a pine wood derby car for my manager. It looked like something someone at MIT would design.. it won, I think everyone knew he and his son didnt build the thing. :)
