Model car building
Its been a long time since ive built a model car but I was in hobby lobby the other day
lookin at them and couldnt beleive the price! they were $22-25 for a standard model kit[:@]
Back when I was a kid I could go to GC Murphys and buy a kit for $1.66
How do kids get into model building nowadays?

RE: Model car building
I used toget SERIOUS into building models, right down to sharpening toothpicks to paint some super-fine details but as I got older I found I dont have as much time or patience as I used to, that and with knuckles getting broken so much I find even at 24 my hands have lost a LOT of their dexterity and steadiness. And youre right, the price anymore is completely and utterly insane.

The last kits ive bought I used a 40% off 1 item coupon at Michaels.
Hey cerealkilla024, you ever used bare metal foil for chrome detail ? (pretty cool)

Ive seen small black electrical wire used for plug wires too.
model car building can get very technical!! (if you want it to)
We used to have a model car club in Chattanooga years ago that met at eastgate mall.
I wish I could remember all the tips they told about.

i love building models. iv got 28 of them on display in my room right now. iv got 3 more in the works out in the garage, andanother 2 that have working hydraulics. and that's just what iv built in the past 20 years. iv slowed down recently do to cost. i remember buying a 70 chevelle when i was 12. i got the car, the paint, the brush's, and the glue (all sold separately)for under 20 bucks. i saw that same chevelle kit at a Michaels Thursday last week for 18 bucks! i still can't believe it.

RE: Model car building
I havent built any in awhile, still have a few unopened 1/24th scale kits I'm planning on giving to my kids.Lately though I've picked up a few 1/12th and 1/8th Monogram kits from the local HobbyLobby [40% off coupon] due to the fact that the parts are bigger and easier to detail.

RE: Model car building
I'm not building a car, but it is a plastic model. A 1/96th scale Revell USS Constitution. I decided to go with the blackening scheme. Once you blacken something, everything has to be blackened. I'm only 4 months into the build and have about 5 years left at the least.

RE: Model car building
The Revell U.S.S. Constitution ( Connie ) is about 32 in. in length and some 27 in. in height. Don't be fooled of it's size, there is plenty of toothpick painting to do. Normally it would take a person about 2 to 2 1/5 years to build her. I say 5+ years because I have too many hobbies going at once. Once I'm finished with the project I'll insert it into a mahogany trimmed high quality glass case where it will remain. When it's all said and done I'll have between 6 and 9 hundred invested.
The next model I'll build is a Billing Boats Oseberg 720 Viking vessel and it's in my possession. Christopher Columbus was NOT the 1st person to explore America, he was much too late, by far.
For the young people who are too busy watching Justin Bieber/ Taylor Swift videos, the U.S.S. Constitution is the 1st battle ship America as we knew it had. She sank/ destroyed over 40 ships and is nicknamed ( Old Iron Sides ) and for good reason.
Notice I used the term knew, instead of know.
Thanks for the kind words...

Anyone know where to find individual parts for model cars? Esp. Wheels and tires?
stock kit parts or aftermarket modification parts?
Pegasus Hobbies and Hoppin Hydro's are 2 company's that make aftermarket stuff. its 95% low rider stuff but nothing you can't modify if you want to

RE: Model car building
Might ask around the model building forums. Most builders have a coupl'a box's full of take off parts from from either kitbashing or modding, thats unless your looking into afterrmarket stuff.I used to pickup cheap NIB and built kits a fleamarkets and garage sales [50cents to coupl'a bucks $$$] and break them up for a specific motor,tires/rims or whatever I wanted to use.I sold a bunch'a that kitbashed stuff awhile back.I do the same with Hotwheels and Matchbox every now and then, pick up a beater 60's-70's oldies that seen better days for cheap then strip'em [brake fluid] repaint them and use a modern donor car for wheels or whatever.Donors are usually dug out'a my kids toy box,,,,Shhhh dont anybody say NUTTIN'[X(]!!
Might pick up some Redliner wheels and decals from here for some builds I'm tinkerin' with.

Pic's of a coupl'a resro rods and mix ups HW's and MB's,I have some more that are going under the chopping block soon. The model boat is a model I picked up off a guy cheap this weekend at the FleaMarket,he had a bunch of other model kits at 80's prices [$5-10],1960's Otaki jumbo Delta.I'm going to Rc this using a Mini Thunder or Rio Driveline, nothing extreme just some cool scale fun,it'll need some drivers but I know of a coupl'a Lego dudes that'll fit the bill.

RE: Model car building
Big bunch'o donor HW oldies that are screamin' for a modern make over! The 3 cars in the second pic have just some minor mods.Camaro is de-tampo'd with added black interior [originally white] and tinited windows.57 Chevy has new red glass, interior.modern redline tires and a need to be redone flat black paint job.The Piper just has disc wheels put up front.
Also heres a pic of a flea market find,a Ford Mustang GTP/IMSA car I for $2.00 partially built but complete with alot of other IMSA rims and tires.I have a couple of more but need to dig them out.

RE: Model car building
with all the big movie productions using more and more computer graphics, model building is a dying industry. Its cool to see people still interested in the hobby and hopefully will be for a long time.
