stay away from the engine its old and wont convert well. trust me on this. look for a engine set up from a donor car. you still find them from time to time. if you go v8 make sure you do front end work and lots of it. also before you do anything know what you want to do and your goal and how much you want to spend. your mind is all over and you need to focus and stick to some kind of plan. if you dont it will get out of control with money and time then you get pissed off and get rid of it. good luck

I used to have a 89 Trans Am GTA with the L98 350 motor. Had gotten the intake plenum bored out, larger intake runners, done up to a 383 stroker, the list of mods can go on and on. Had tons of mods done to it. Swapping out that V6 and doing in a V8 is not as straight forward as it may seem. Motor mounts for one, for the tranny you will have to get a smaller drive shaft. It may take more money at first but do it right the first time. What size V6 do you have. If its the 3.8 you can get some Cyclone, or Typhoon heads, low compression pistons, crank, bore it out, and go turbo. Now that would be sick.

vortech head swap. they even have TBI intakes for that conversion now. im putting them in my vette this winter.
Displacement means VERY little if your heads flow like crap, heads are where your power comes from.

spend the money to put some muscle into your muscle car.

look shark my man does not have the $$$$ for that. look you can find a tpi set with everything for cheap. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pts/2048745939.html so check criagslist ebay trading times for stuff. then a 383 stroker heads exhust cam chip you have the trans some nice rims paint job maybe a nos kit but keep it lite dont go nuts. I'm thinking if you have buds you can do all this for under 7k and do your sound sys but dont go crazy on that.

cars are big pits you throw all your money into. save your money hold on to the car put it away get a good every day driver for cheap and buy a house in 2012 because it will be a good time to buy. trust me brother, I know its not cool and all but you will be better off.

no point in building to high power of a motor as your exhaust options are very limited on these cars single three inch all the way back is really the best, if you got a good exhaust man you can tuck twin 2 inch pipes up in there but its gonna be about 17 bends to get it right and it will still rattle and rub against itself, you can go realy booty fab and run the pipes under the floorpan but these cars sit low enough that is just a problem waiting to happen. You can save yourself alot of hassle by avoiding the fuel injection, a single four barrell will usually make more horsepower on a naturally aspired motor anyway. The vortech head are ok but I wouldn't spend more than $200 on a pair, you can get the RHS steel heads with all new parts for $369 at swap meats usually, with all the new companies out its hard to tell which one it was but I have seen 64cc chamber 190 cc flow rate 2.02 valved aluminum heads going for $499 a pair brand new, might as well loose some weight if you can afford to, on AVERAGE an aluminum small block chevy head weights 21 lbs less than a steel, combine that with an aluminum intake and you got a 70 lb weight savings, get rid of the exhaust manifolds for headers and you are over 80 lbs. IMO If its a 2.8 there is no point in even working on it, if its a 4.3 you could always turbo it but thats gonna be a headache and big money unless you got some super duper skills to fab your own setup and tune it.

forgot to mention, the 1982 305s had a four barrell setup, this is the easiest throttle cable to use if you run a four barrell but I have seen the 2.8 TBI version used as well, in 1982 you had three and four speed auto trannies so depending on if you run the 700r4 or not the tranny mounts might be a little different but it ain't hard to go from a v6 to a v8 IMO. If you want something real unique you could always build a turbo 2.5 iron duke 4 banger to put in it, the 2.5 was put in these cars in 82 also.

i know, thats why i bought the vette, i bought it for pennies, it has a solid frame, body and drive train. becuase i can work on it, i will get the money back after the work is done, maybe even more.

doing the work on say, mustang, camaro ect, all that money spent in hop ups is thrown away as it does little if not lower the resale. it is simply for fun.

my bud had the 305ho z28 with t-tops 5spd trans was nice ran real good. 5.0 mustangs would eat him up tho. camaro just has to much weight. iron duke! man that brings back memories. all the head gaskets and head bolts [X(] never want work on them again. they leak oil from every gasket and seal known to man. they ran good tho even without oil.

my friend smashed the z28 then got a 1988 iroc-z 5.7 I liked it alot untill i replaced the starter...

This post makes no sense. If you could get a whole S-10 that does 180 and survives for $100. why not just forget the car and go with the truck?

well i dont think the truck could do 180 not even in a stright line. also to give up a 400hp engine for a $100 is a tad odd but hey I just roll with it.

I use to own a 79' formula firebird. It had a 4.9 liter Pontiac v8, automatic, power everything, handling package and posi-traction. I paid $3,300 for it with just over 38k miles. It was in mint condition, 2 tone metallic blue w/silver on the bottom and formula written in big letters on each side.

I kick my self for selling it. I have an uncle who owns a farm and I could have easily put it in his barn and thrown a tarp over it. When I sold it in 93' I had no idea they'd be worth so much today.

The Balzer looks good. I only mentioned buying the truck because you said he would sell you the transmission out of it for more than he wants for the entire, mint, truck.
