i was thinking of upgrading to vista, but im not sure. what do you think? will i still be able to play the games i have? will it slow my computer down? i currently have XP with 1.5GB of RAM, 120GB hard drive, 1.73Ghz processor and 128MB of graphics memory. so in my situation, do you think i should upgrade to vista?

vista can be up to 58% slower than XP. Its a dull version of macintosh but has DLL hell. Stay with XP as long as you can. Cherish it, because what is still a terrible operating system, will seem oh so great when they stop making licenses for it in half a year.

Though Vista is a 64bit OS and there are 64bit CPUs on market (Intel pentium 4 is NOT 64bit), there is still too much of the hardware that is till only 32bits. So, if you have a 64bit CPU and Vistas, your software will still data bottleneck on the hardware that is still only 32bits. Worse yet, too many applications out there are still stuck at the ancient and stupid slow 32bits and that combined with the 32bit crap on your computer, the 32bit crap all conspire to hobble what the 64bit vista and CPUs are supposed to improve.
I would wait until all hardware becomes 64bits and program writers stop writing in 32bit code. Windows XP is the way to go until 32bits is eliminated and obsolete.
Additionally, MS has a current policy and motto: new Vistas owneres are the beta testers. That means when they run into an error, they get the screen that says "an error has occurred, report this error to MS?" This is sad becuase current owvers of Vistas shelled out hundreds of dollars for that OS either by buying that OS out right or that cost is built-into the cost of the new 'puters they buy.

i bought a new comp with less than what yours has and it came with vista, i personally like it and have found nothing wrong with it. and ive been able to play games on it well and with a new graphics card and more ram (i currently have 1gb) it would play games realy well. in my opinion i think its just as good as XP

im prob going to try to cling to xp as long as humanly possible. some of the design programs are very intensive. one program that i run wants a minimum of 1.5gb of ram and reccomends 4gb. right now i have a laptop w 2gb of ram. unfourtanatly i only hav 2 ram slots so im maxed out on that comp. from what i hear vista wants a min of 1gb just to run. im not sure if this is true though but w all the fancy coloring and shading i could see how it would use that much. and i would also assume that its going to slow your graphics card as well. not to mention im sure ms came out w more backround programs to run behind the scenes. but hey. if i plan to update my design programs im going to have to get vista. (yay just another excuse to get a new comp.)

Vistas is a pig of a progam (jut like all XP) and requires a ton of resources. I know XP alone will eat up to 10GB of hard drive space. Vistas will require 4 to 5 times more spac (I think). And this is just hard drive space! Other reources in your 'puter will alo be taxed when running this MS mammoth.
As for running Vistas, I would recommend at least 3GB. When you multitask, thos extra GBs will really be soaked up quick. If you can get 4GB, by all means, upgrade with 2GB memory sticks.

I'm using Vista right now and I have mixed opinions about it. I'm using a pretty good computer to run it and I just hate how slow it is on start-up, and I don't think I can blame the computer, Vista just tries to get fancy with their stupid login screens. My computer specs are: Intel Core2 Duo e6420, 2GB Ram, 640GB HDD and a few other things, and I run vista pretty good. Load times for everything is almost nothing due to the speed of the processor and ram. As for what vista needs to run, I'm pretty sure it only needs 512mb of ram to run, but recommends 1GB. I am using a lot more HDD space with this computer. My old computer that I was using was running windows media center and I had it for a little over a year and only had like 30GB of the HDD used where as this computer I'm using now is already using 45GB and I've had it for around 9 days. I don't think I'll have a problem with my HDD running out of room since I have a hell of a lot, but for people with maybe 80GB hdd's this could be a problem.

i run a design program called autodesk inventor. it uses tons of ram. having 2gb of ram isnt near close enough to what it wants. it constantly freezes up or just crashes.
