first car decision
me and my dad are lookin around for some either used or new cars and the one that we both decided wold be the best for me is either a Chevy Silverado or the Chevy Short Bed
now i like both I'm just wondering what yall think of the cars
stuff like durability - is it going to last ill I'm 30 or 40 years old
horse power - is the engine got enough power to be hauling the camper full of stuff
you know just general stuff like that

RE: first car decision
what year and model of silverado are you talking about (half-ton, 2500HD,3500HD), cause the newer silverado's you can get the 5.3 vortec V8. with 315 hp 338 lb.-ft. of torque. i think thats plenty to pull a camper. if you need more power get the 2500HD you can get those in diesel (i would) or with a 6.0 Vortec with 353 hp and 373 lb.-ft. of torque. but if you want torque get the Duramax 6.6 turbo, 365 horsepower and 660 lb.-ft. of torque. and with diesel it gets better MPG and diesel prices are lower then gasoline now.

RE: first car decision
Are you talking about purchasing brand new?
Do you mean Colorado when you say short bed?
I personally like a Ram 1500 short bed. Not quite for all the hauling and towing but it still has some functionality of a truck, but more so looks damn good.

RE: first car decision
years for the Silverado would be from 1990 to 2000 and it will most likely be 2500HD
and ill have to look into getting a diesel... we've talked about it before and the only reason my dad doesn't like um all that much is because (he says) there hard to start in the winter because it can get so cold up here in Wisconsin and because there aren't that may mechanics around here who know how to work on diesel engines
and -Inverted- yes i do mean the Colorado

RE: first car decision
How old are you now?
Just read the title so I'm guessing 16-18. They could last you until you are 35, but they will be rust buckets, nothing interior will work, and you will have to bring it in to fix that tranny or engine a few times. A Toyota has a much better chance of lasting that long

RE: first car decision
Maybe, but theres a reason more and more people are buying "jap" trucks and American Auto companies are going out of business. American cars are designed with a specific lifespan.

Surely you can't say the Baja 1000 isn't a grueling and enduring race?
Durability, quality, and reliability are just a small number of reasons the Toyotas are the most commonly used vehicles for this race.
Aside from this point let me know why Toyotas hold their value for so much longer then american made cars?
Im no biased user, I like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc.
They each have their pros and cons.

RE: first car decision
I've got a `98 Jimmy and a `94 Ranger sitting in my driveway. I'm not a Ford man but I can't complain a bit about the Ranger. The Jimmy on the other hand has been nothing but trouble and so was the other GM products that I've owned the past few years. I've been wanting to replace the Ranger but when my main rides keep having problems, those are the ones that get replaced. Last week the power seat switch had to be replaced so I went to the local Chevy dealership to get a price on one, $146.00!!!!!!!! I ended up by finally finding one at a junkyard 35 miles away for $20.00 . If there's anything electrical on this ride, it's had its share of gremlins. Last year the block cracked, the heater core went bad and too many other problems to mention. A Chevy Lumina that I had cracked a head at 70,000 miles, a typical problem for the 3.1 liter engines.
Japanese cars are looking better all the time.
