well we have 5 things using the modem.
1) Mac, connected straight to the modem
2) Dell, this is wireless
3) Laptop, wireless
4) iPod Touch wireless
5) Xbox 360 wired
now when i use xbox and my mom is on the apple every single time the whole internet shuts down randomly and then we have to restart the modem so it will work again. its starting to bug my mom a lot so i was sondering what a good fast internet modem that is better then the one we have would be and the cost?

RE: good internet modem
My wife works for Comcast and she said that the netgears you get from the cable company are worthless. They say they can support up to 5 computers, but the more you have hooked up to them the worse your connections are. That is why we have bought our own Linksys. Since then, we have not had any issues. They vary in price starting in the $50 range. But it ends up paying for itself because if you have your own, you can save yourself the $2 or more per month the cable company charges you for renting theirs. If you choose to get your own you will still need to have a regular cable modem, since the Linksys routers need to connect to a cable modem for you to get wireless internet.

Yeah I knew you were, but I think the OP is confusing the parts of his system. I am running a Netgear N router and love it, but am considering buying my own cable modem instead of the one supplied by Bright House networks in my area. Any suggestions there?

netgear routers are good, BUT they run hot. every once in a while they will thermal and reset (netgear support rums confirmed this.) So always set them up standing up so the hear can escape.
Some users even have installed small PC fans that run off the internal power.

RE: good internet modem
I love my netgear rangmax. I have no heat problems... There's a small cheap one and then this is the next one up. It seems like everyone around here has one of them.[8D]
I'v had mine for almost a year and it is working with no problems. I have a touch and two computers wired to it.

RE: good internet modem
If you have your internet service from your cable company, then the modem will be the "thing with flashing lights" with a coax cable running to the back of it. It will also have a ethernet cable(CAT5) coming out going to the router. The router is also a "thing with flashing lights", but this devices splits off the connection over WIFI and probably has a built in 4 port switch. The router will also have a built in firewall, and you can configure it to your best needs. Both will probably be warm. Do you have part numbers or model numbers of what you are referring to?

RE: good internet modem
Your cable company should be able to give you a list of compatible modems. The old Motorola Surfboards are workhorses that rarely break down in my experience. And they can be had for cheap if you look at used ones.
For routers (this is where you are experiencing problems) you should be able to use just about any out there. The Linksys WRT54GL is a decent one for around $50 or so.
