I hear you on that. Back in the 70's, GM was up to the same kind of tactic back then, well, they did not outsource overseas to make crap cars, they unfortunately made crap cars on American soil and became an embarrassment to made in the USA (which I actually am angry about).
One of the cars that they made was called the Nova. The Nova might have been okay at the time, but I am very sure that the Novas had their fair share of lemons coming straight form the factory.
In the Spanish speaking Amaricas, the Nova got a bad reputation. and Nova (No Va) in spanish means ''It does not go!'' Thus Nova sales in the Spanish speaking Americas sold horribly.
I am actually angry that GM has the never to still do this and try to pass trash cars, even to the UK. I am sad to see that they are still trying to play this 1970's tactic 40 years later. I do hope that the GM restructuring seriously explores this and makes positive changes.

Also, the Nova was not called a Nova in Mexico and lands further south if ThunderbirdJunkie has been correctly informed.

The 80s Nova was a Toyota.

RE: What if you got fooled?
Larry believes TBJ can talk about himself in the third person all he wants. That is a part of TBJ's online charisma.
Nova's were really big with the "redneck" crowd around here a few years ago. Everybody had one and they were all loud with fat rear tires, even the ones that my 4 cyl Mustang outran. I hated getting stuck behind one in traffic. They always smelled worse than my Great Aunt Betty's farts. [:'(] Now they are pretty much all sitting on blocks in their owners' yards, rusting away. The "rednecks" have moved on to pickups sitting on tires taller than Reiko.

I would like to try one out but there are none around. We only have the Vauxhall Monaro here and you don't even find those in showrooms. I think they must be made to order only.
The centre part of the steering wheel looks like the old 5-series, as does the area around the glove box a little. The air ducts you can't tell as VW's are the same. The only problem with that is that it already looks dated lol.
At least copy a new car...
Good to hear that it handles well though.

right back to 1989. just changed a little on the guards
and lights. from 89- the v6 models had a 3.8 litre motor
out of a front wheel drive buick up till two years ago.
i have never been a fan of them, 6 or 8 cyl until the new one.
basing it off a couple year old bmw was the best thing they have ever done
if you cant create it copy it.
back on topic, cars with the same badges made by pretty much
the same company i dont really have a problem with, as most parts
used are the same, but the chinese are making something called the "great wall"
its a "ute" (utility) / pickup whatever based on a isuzu platform and apperantly
failed numerous safety tests. definatly would buy one of those.

Craaap. I thought it was from Australia. I think you are correct and I was mistaken.
As for the third-person perspective discussion? Let's leave it alone.

RE: What if you got fooled?
Uh-oh, somebody's in trouble.
That's one nice looking example TBJ. Reminds me of a '66 Fairlane I almost bought a couple years ago. Looked sound and solid all around, then opened the trunk and popped the hood, bubbled paint, rust, freakin antifreeze jug as a coolant reservoir and another as windshield washer fluid reservoir. Changed my mind pretty quick.
Calling a truck a "Great Wall" is ridiculous. No vehicle can measure up to the awe and magnitude of the Great Wall. It won't be long and some in the USA will be buying cars with "Made in China" stamped on the trunk.

RE: What if you got fooled?
lolwarranty
Sorry, but there's a reason Hyundai/Kia cars are so expensive
That is because of the 10yr/100k mile warranty. Which you will be using.
Otherwise, the cars would be 2-3,000 dollars cheaper than they are.
The fact that the new Kia whatever Koupe is almost exactly the same price as a Civic is just absolutely ridiculous.
Also, warranty does not mean you will not be pushing the thing. Ask ThunderbirdJunkie's parents about their lemon '93 Dakota. They normally put ~20-25k miles a year on a vehicle (IE, dad's '05 Colorado with 110k on it)
The Dakota was bought new, and traded in in '96 for an Exploder. Dakota only had 35k miles on it. Granted, they put about the same amount of miles on several Dodge Spirits and a Neon as loaner cars.

RE: What if you got fooled?
hmm, odd that. Hyundai Kia are very cheap here, much cheaper than Hondas but that could be because they have a 6 or 7 year warranty rather than 10.

Like the Australian brand Holden. Their top of the range cars are actually all American with a LS2/LS3 engine and sold dirt cheap. Same with the Vauxhall Monaros.
Im just thinking but no one should be fooled. The dealer should firstly tell you at least what chassis the car shares with others if it does so. The fact that my Alfa Mito is derived from the Fiat Puntos chassis did put me off a bit but during the test drive it was clear that it was tweaked to give it better handling.
Also most people who buy a car will research it before hand online or through car magazines and that will tell them what lies underneath the bodywork.

What about the flip side of the question?
What if you buy a relitively inexpensive ''American'' car and find out it's got a lot of high end car parts underneath? You are still being ''fooled'' but would you still be pissed?

what get's me is the G8 (rebadged commodore) was going to cost less in america, evan once taking exchange rates into account then it does here.
