Just said this on the other thread too... Unemployment is a lagged indicator. The USA is currently making its money out of exports and the financial sector again, hence there is no reall effect on employment levels. Once it reaches such a state that sales are booming then more people will be employed. The economy is currently not using all of its resources so productivity can be increased with what it currently has.

also to note, many companies have slashed jobs and other budget items to run as slim as possible. Even though average sales figures may remain down for that company, their cost of operation is now very low and a profit may be shown. This Recovery view just overlooks that a company has a skeleton crew running the ship and their day to day operating budget is very small. Look at the auto companies, they are showing ok numbers now, but how many factories and dealerships were closed and how many different vehicles were slashed from their lines? Since the profit shows that companies are making money, therefore the economy must be improving... despite the rising unemployment.

i agree completely with tjett, now that companies are doing better after laying people off, the economy is on the up, but those who lost their jobs are still out of the workforce.

And that is going to be a problem. Since those people are now on govnment assistance (unemployment or whatever), this recovery cannot last until those people are back working again and earning what they used to make before being laid off. They will instead continue to need income assistance. And by doing that, they are not spending to contribute to repair the economy (except to buy only what they need: food, clothes, maybe some of theier house payment so they have a place to stay).

And even the companies who are now profitting because they cut costs and exported the manufacturing an jobs out of country will begin to suffer again because the now unemployed who used to be their customers cannot buy their goods.

Could Not agree anymore.

Sure most businesses are cutting people out and saving themselves. But who's there buying their products to keep them still in business?
Even at Barrett Jackson (Classic and exotic car auctions normally on Speed channel) The car's we're not going for what they would sell for in a better "sign of the times" situation.

Unfortunately for those of you who are Anti Wal-Mart, they are stronger then ever. NOBODY has the extra spending power to buy what they need. Not only that, they are still pushing to make their prices as low as possible. [:-]
