Wyotech v.s. UTI?
ok, im a senior in high school, and i want to be a diesel mechanic, and i dont know which of these two schools to choose. it seems like wyotech goes in deeper the uti, but i dont know. so leaving everything out of the equation (location, cost, weather) which would you recommend?

RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
Go to a real diesel shops and ask if they need any help. It's better to do that than spend 20 grand on an education and then work as an oil change jockey.
ThunderbirdJunkie's shops he's worked for hired UTI/Wyotech/other automotive course grads as tire techs and lube techs. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
im actually doing that right now through an internship program with my school, and the city of peoria working at their fleet place working on garbage trucks, and the people im working with told me that they all went to uti because it is in arizona.

RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
ThunderbirdJunkie lived in Phoenix. He knows ;)
Still recommending going to various diesel specialist shops and asking for a job. Don't call; GO. Tell them what you're doing now, tell them what you want to do. Make contact with the shop manager/foreman/whatever they may call the guy at that particular place and shake his hand. Personal contact is the only way to fly in that industry (or any, really). |

As a lube tech...or?
Being serious, not a stab. 1988 is not 2010. |

ORIGINAL: ThunderbirdJunkie As a lube tech...or? Being serious, not a stab. 1988 is not 2010. No offense taken; he just recently got laid off (8 months ago) by the Mitsubishi dealer he had worked at since 93 he was making more than service manager. He just recently got hired from a Mitsubishi/Hyundai dealer and all I here from him every time I see him is that he's making a little more than half of what he used to make; he used to $75K (flat rate) a year. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
That sucks, man. It's rough out there right now...especially at dealerships. He may want to go check out some of the independent shops.
ThunderbirdJunkie decided he'd just go back to school, way easier that way. Not even 30 yet (for a few months, at least) so might as well, right :D |

Not even 30 yet (for a few months, at least) so might as well, right :D I am pretty sure I cannot do the job I did before so I have to look in a different direction; after I settle my case I'm gonna try to enroll in a culinary arts program. There's nothing wrong with getting or continuing an education; even for me at 39 yrs of age and I heard a couple days ago that the recession is officially over. Hopefully that's true and things start picking up; either way I am not really struggling and with the money I am getting for disability I have been able to buy some rc's to play with and I think I am gonna get me another one (Savage Flux). My lawyer says I could not have picked a better time (since Jan 2009) to file a compensation claim and receive disability. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
Right?
Sucks to hear you got injured though, man. Wouldn't wish that on anybody. But yeah...anybody that says it's over...hopefully they're wrong until fall 2011 when ThunderbirdJunkie is done with school:) |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
I went to MMI (UTI) for motorcycles, graduated right after the stock market dumped as top tech and had to go right back to the old job I had before I went to school. The only difference is now I owe about $17,000 dollars in student loans. Awesome....

RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
But you got a sweet toolbox and stuff out of it didn't ya?
Have you considered going into a maintenance field, rather than working on bikes? You'd still be working on poorly maintained stuff, just stuff that doesn't go fast and look cool. Being 100% serious. Far more job security. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
I got some Snap On tools for half price, about $500.00 worth but no toolbox other than what I have already. I'm working at a small engine repair shop but I was there before I went to school so the only thing that changed was the amount of money I now owe. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I guess.
One thing to remember about these schools is that you get a very basic education. Enough to get a foot in the door at a shop somewhere but don't expect to be the man and know it all when you're done with school. Sweeping the floors and taking out the trash will be a part of your new job till you get some real world experience. I've been working on motorcycles for 25 years already for myself and friends but decided to get some paper (diploma) backing up what I say I can do and life happened and things changed while I was in school. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
i have 3 friends that went to wyotech and then onto the the vw/audi grad program. they all got excellent starting positions and salaries when they entered the workforce, at a vw/audi dealer of course.
i have one friend who went to uti, and i think the only reason he did well was because he was a smart kid, he even said he wished he went to wyotech. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
Another school to think about in the same area of study is Nashville Auto Diesel College. They teach the same things as wyotech and UTI, but they arent as big of a school. They only have one campus ( nashville obviously), and the staff is great. The class population is smaller so you get to know the instructor a little better. I toured all 3 campuses (Nashville, Wyotech,UTI)before graduation from a tech. school automotive program. They also have an option of taking a few extra courses to earn an associates degree in applied science. Check them out before you make your decision.

One of my distant cousins got a degree as a mechanic and he was a oil change jockey till the place downsized him to hire some kid for less. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
i talked to the shop im working for now, and a different shop that i could have gotten the internship through, and both require education, and both only employ people from schools like these. plus 5 years experience in the real world
ORIGINAL: The_Shark very true, i have almost 4years of auto education and still work as a oil tech and bearly a apprentice. check to see what diesle mechanics are looking for, eductation, expiriance, both or none, then decide if you need it. some dealers will give you free training. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
KC/SK/Whatever initials you want used;
The biggest reason the shops in your area want an "education" (meaning a paper that's worth 20 grand) is because there are SO MANY people in your area with little to no experience in the "Real" workin-on-stuff world that have degrees. Give Colorado or New Mexico a shot. If you want to be a diesel tech, the work is out there; just gotta look for it. If you want to be a diesel tech in your current area, you gotta do what ya gotta do. |
RE: Wyotech v.s. UTI?
how is Wyoming for diesel techs?
