The Beast has arrived

Been a while since I've unpacked a brand new PC, normally I'd have built it myself using the same parts but I just don't have the time right now. It sure is a beast though

Core i7 940 Quad Core 2.93ghz
12GB RAM
3 Way SLI running nVidia GTX 285s

It's like Christmas in April :D[&:]

Sorry for the low quality pics, I just snapped them without thinking right. The stack of video cards alone makes me feel inadequate as a man. My girlfriend may like them more than she likes me :(

^ You don't have to do that. Just move to California and become an art dealer.

I didnt even know it was possible to triple SLI 3 vid cards together.

Me either. What MoBo did you use? The one I selected only allowed two.

Pic of the case please.

Let me take a stab at the case: Is it an Antec case?

I recognize the securing tabs and the clear side-out with the fan mount in the middle of it.

Do I get a cupie doll?

grrrr sheo you made me login, i was minding my own business lurking and now i see damn you!!!!!!!!!

Ok to help answer some Q;s triple sli is kinda new, back in oct of 07 it was mentioned to be released, but ATI has did one better and has qaud cross fire X,

This is the mobo i'm gonna use for it, supports both sli and crossfire X i could almost bet its cheaper then what sheo payed.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157155

ok back on topic, still a beast of a machine, i think the next upgrade when it becomes available is water cooling if your case supports it.

Still a killer build man, got a full list of everything that came with it? I'm a stubborn when it comes to things like this i want to see if i can build your pc cheaper for the fun of it.

One thing tho, do not overclock out of box, this chip needs to be warmed up like braking in a nitro engine take it easy after i would say the first week you should have no prob taking it up to 3.8ghz with stock cooler, now from your i can see and easy 4.0ghz. I believe with water cooling and the 965 chip its highest stable oc was 4.6 or 5.2ghz so these chips can take a pounding, but really taking yours up to 3.4 will be nothing for the chip and its already gonna be fast but it can only get faster not to mention if you OC the cards and your ram.

I wanna see some bench marks of this beast. also since this is a gamer pc, download steam sheo so we can own together...

Oh and be sure to pick the Logitech G25 Racing Wheel and Simbin's GTR Evolution. Your rich so you can afford it.

Or if you want to go to the next level you could try the RennSport Cockpit or any of the Fanatec wheels. They have an exclusive license from Porsche to make there wheels.

I helped him pick out the cooler over AIM lol. No doubt you can crank that sucker to 4.0 with that beast of a cooler. I dont think Sheo plays Racing games, but the G25 is a blast for a wheel though. I had it for a couple of months for my PC. I got bored of it though and sold it. But it was crazy fun when I had it. Played Test Drive Unlimited with it.

With triple vid cards, I wonder just how much graphics capability a machine will have? I bet there is not a game on the market that will slow his machine down by a milisecond due to graphics!

Welll, just played Crysis for the first time (great game BTW) - very high settings all around at 1680x1050 without a hickup even in the most intense outdoor environments. My monitor is the limitation at this point.

pythonfan 04-16-2009 04:16 AM

RE: The Beast has arrived

Well yea crysis is the benchmarking game for gaming pc's it was designed around the 9800;s before anyone had a winkling the existed, Crysis is known to be the one game no pc has yet to max out, due to monitors holding it back nor pc's powerful enough to see its max fps.

Welcome to the club! I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I do mine.

No game taxes my puter. 60 fps without fail (max refresh on my big screen). I'd love to see what I can get on crysis with a 120 hz monitor. But I have to wonder if it would look any different. 60 fps is pretty awesome. You might not be able to notice the difference between say 80 and 60.

I opted for the Nvidia 790i Ultra SLI MoBo & an Antec 1200 case. No overclock, why bother? I am really looking forward to getting some games that push my computer - but I bet I have to wait a couple of years.

Almost forgot... 3 cards/SLI means no expansion slots available. I was thinking of getting one of thos Killer nic's since online gaming is sometimes limited by network traffic - even with my 11 meg DSL account. But there isn't anywhere to put it with those 3 gigantic vid cards. Someone needs to make a MoBo that you can link 3 vid cards and still have an expansion slot or two open. I suppose this means a new form factor. [:o]

RE: The Beast has arrived

Sheo, RCtruckRacer - I have a question regarding quad cores. Back in the day (1 core per cpu), a dual proc setup wasn't necessarily "twice as fast" as a single cpu for the normal users (even gamers I think). In fact, the application had to be written to take advantage of multiple CPUs for it to be worth it - otherwise, it could be a waste. Regardless, they certainly didn't scale linearly.

There was seemed to be a guy out there who'd toss out tons of $$ building a quad CPU machine that was a waste since he never did video/GFX editing, CAD, etc. Not everyone understood that doubling your CPUs didn't necessarily mean doubling your effective computer processing power.

But for dual > quad cores - do you guys find that they DO scale much better, at least for common things like games? When I hear "quad core", I immediately associate it with a quad cpu waste of $$ unless you're running a gfx workstation, but....is that true anymore?

Thoughts are appreciated!

DarkFire989 04-16-2009 12:35 PM

RE: The Beast has arrived

Problem is that not many games utilize all the cores in the CPU. So I think your actually just using 1 core out of the 4 for most games.

HJJFFFAA 04-16-2009 01:41 PM

RE: The Beast has arrived

It's not necessarily that the game is running on multiple cores rather that other processes can be swithced to other cores and the game given priority on one. Right now dual core is probably all you'll need for some badass gaming. But I can garauntee that some new game engines that support multiple threads will be rearing their heads shortly.

With more cores your able to multitask better.
