Programs using a lot of memory
Does anyone know why FireFox would start using more memory then it used to?
A few months ago Iwould always have lik 10 - 12 tabs open all day and FF would only use 90,000 - 140,000 memory (in the task manger) but since a few months ago I started closing some of the tabs Ihad open and now I only have 3 - 6 tabs open and FF is using 160,000 - 250,000 memory. One of the reason Istarted using FF instead of IE was because FF used less memory than IE, but now FF is using just as much. Ihaven't changed anything since when it was using the less memory to now, when it using a lot more. Istill have only 36 processes like I normally do. (new questions below) |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Hmm...I don't know what to tell you. I've got 3 tabs open and its running at 83,000.Don't know why it would suddenly jump, especially if you have less tabs open.
|
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Its at 260,000 with only 5 tabs, no graphics, games, or anything that uses a lot of memory open in any of those 5 tabs.
Also I'm running FF 3.0.11. I had FF 3.5 Beta 4 but it changed back to 3.0.11 be its self the day after I installed 3.5 I ran a registry cleaner, and defragmented my drive to day to try and get it to run faster, but no luck really. I run virus scans every week (AVG 8.5, and Spy bot) and no viruses. Yeah! post number 4444 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Whats it go to when you only have 1 tab open?
|
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Closed all tabs and waited a few minutes and it dropped to 228,000
When I first time my computer on and open FF it starts out at 28k then goes to 50k, 70k, 90k, 120k, 130k, 160k and then about an hour or so later its up to 180k - 220k+ and stays there all day. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
try google chrome, i have 5 tabs open at 57k
|
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
How many addons, themes and plugins do you have and run?
I've got 5 tabs (all forums) with 7 addons, no themes and 23 plugins running and Firefox is at 161,554. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
FF is just a RAM hog no matter how you look at it.
|
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
well what os you running?
on my xp machine with 6tabs open i am using 108-112k stable I'm on vista 64bit right now with 6 and one pop out window and its using 120-122k |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
15 plug-ins, 3 add-on (no scripts, AVG safe search and Yoyo games player) and no themes.
I'm running XP SP3. Sheo, FF has never been a memory hog before. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
I downloaded FF 3.5 b99 and it's using just as much as 3.0.11.
Would my anti virus cause FF to use a lot of memory? Off topic question. Where does FF store bookmarks? |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
avg safe search is bad, and noscipt is unnescesary. all you need is adblock +

RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Anyone know how to back up or copy the bookmarks in FF? I can't find where FF stores them, and there's a lot I don't want to lose if I remove FF.

|
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
ORIGINAL: snowbl!nd Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks > Import and Backup For some reason it only lets me save it as .json or .html (all book marks in one html page) atleast Igot them some where if I do end up removing FF. Ialtered the config inFFand told it to stop storing cache in the memory and after a few hoursit was 220,000, but now its only 160,000 (it was 220mb about 10 min ago, and now its 160) weird. Incase someone wants to know how to change the config you just type about:config in the location bar. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Have a look through this linky. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reducing_memory_usage_(Firefox)
P.S. Keep NoScript as the more I learn about exploits the more they depend on javascript, Flash, etc. If that method doesn't work then they try to throw a PDF or download your way. Edit: Here is how to backup and restore your bookmarks. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up...arks_-_Firefox |

RE: Programs using a lot of memory
I was working in PS (PhotoShop) a few minutes ago and noticed that it was using a lot more memory than usual too. I've never seen PS using more than 150mb, but just now (after only using the program for 30minutes tops) it was using 400mb.
Anyone have an idea what's going on here? |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
i think you might have something running hidden in the background that's causing it to flux, if anything i would check for a virus or adware or something cause if its jumping that much then something other then the prog itself causing the issue.

RE: Programs using a lot of memory
MalwareBytes anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware both have free versions that are good to scan with and remove malware. The free versions are for scanning only and provide no real time protection.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.superantispyware.com/ I also would not install two anti-virus (AVG and Avast) applications on your computer at the same time. Keep whatever your normal anti-virus is and if you want a 2nd opinion use an online scanner. The ESET (NOD32) online scanner seems to be good. http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ Or you could use Trend Micro HouseCall online scan. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
I did full scans with AVG, Spybot and Ad-aware and none of them found anything.
FF still jumps around in memory usage from 170mb to 250mb (with out me opening or closing any tabs.) |

I also recommend visiting Secunia's site to do an online scan for vulnerable programs you may be running. They have an online scan or a downloadable version you can use. It will let you know if Windows, Flash Player, Java, Media players, etc are up to date. Here is the link. http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/ As far as Firefox's memory usage, did you look at the first link in post #17? |

Tho i think for me anyways is why are you so concerned on how much mem your using? if its and issue buy some more its dirt cheap nowadays, and all pc's even the best will hes-ate do to memory fluxing. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Dialed_In, I looked at the link, and it didn't help with the memory usage. I found another link that gave a few more suggestions that I'm trying right now.
pythonfan, I could run a few big programs at one time and my computer run all of them just as well as my dad's with 2gb. I used to be able to, but know I can't. I don't see why I all of a sudden need more memory when I never did before. (I'm running all the same programs I've always has too) I can get a 2gb stick of memory for $38.00. If I could find it cheaper than that I might get more memory. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
Well MalwareBytes found nothing.

RE: Programs using a lot of memory
how long has it been since you reformatted?
That will speed your pc alot, you should do it every few months just to keep it clean and healthy. One thing you can try it take your ram out let it wait a little bit and put the ram back in, this will flush the cach, and help speed up a tiny bit as ram is memory and memory gets full sometimes and then moves over to your hard drive. It also could be a windows update. |

I <span _fcktemp="1"></span>may just have to restart FF every now and then through out the day. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
The trick to backups is testing them ;). At a minimum you should create data backups of pics, music, software keys, etc.
Good to hear MalwareBytes came up clean. Do you have CCleaner? It's a simple program that cleans up the junk files on your computer. You can get it at your favorite download site or directly from them. I recommend the "slim" version that comes without the optionally installed toolbar. The slim build is at the bottom of this page. http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Note: CCleaner will clean up your browsers cache, cookies, history, etc. It also allows you to check or uncheck items that you do or do not want cleaned. I would run the cleaner regularly to keep things tidy. Don't mess with the registry cleaner and if you do, make a backup when it asks you to before fixing the issues. I wish I could help more. The 3.5 version of Firefox should be out soon (July?) as it's already a release candidate. I know some folks have had memory issue with Firefox while others get along fine. With 3 tabs open I'm at 91,000K but my system is no slouch. |

RE: Programs using a lot of memory
It's also good to backup to multiple types of media when possible like hard drives, cd, dvd's, USB sticks, etc. I also know people who use multiple backup/imaging apps just to be sure.
When's the last time you defragged your hard drive? You could run ccleaner then defrag. Sorry, I forgot you tried the Firefox betas. I'm about out of all the easy ideas. You could always check your memory with memtest if you wanted to. There a program called PageDefrag that defrags the page file. You could try running Firefox(safe mode) and see if there is any difference. Try disabling add-ons one at a time to see if there is a difference. I know you tried disabling the AVG scan thing. And, you could always buy more memory. NewEgg is an excellent place to buy computer parts with great service. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
well avg is a huge memory hog , i stopped using it , but if you notice it going slower sounds like you have hidden viruses and spyware , other than that you may be using up too much space in the hard drive and should start deleting crap you dont really need , Also you maybe have too many installed programs , but most of all delete the crap from your hard drive .
If your looking for a very smart program to clean your pc , go to www.download.com and download a program called Advanced SystemCare its a free program , and it can free up your memory too , when you get it go into utilites and click on SMART RAM then click on GO and choose how much you want to free , i kept on clicking on deep clean untill my ram was back to normal , and it helped alot my pc was heaps faster after that , you can also have the smart ram running in the background and it inteligently frees up memory as you use your pc doing whatever you are doing . |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
We have our backups on another drive, but we also have 3 computers backed up on that drive.
I ran CCleaner and defraged my drive a few days ago. splcrazy, I used to run CA and that was a memory huge memory hog compared to AVG. I might try Avast just to try it, but I"m not sure. I have an 80gb hard drive with 45gb of free space let. I doubt that's too much. |
RE: Programs using a lot of memory
I don't think you can go wrong by trying Avast. It's a very stable and complete free anti-virus program. I have it installed on my mothers, sisters and nieces computers. If you try it only use the 'shields' (web, email, P2P, messaging, etc.) that you need.
