Movie: Flags of our fathers
1 Attachment(s)
Just saw the movie; "Flags of our fathers". I thought it was really good and think it will be one of the better war movies out there. there was some good Corsair action even though a couple of them sounded like Mustangs. the movie brought a bit of a tear to my eyes because I lost my Dad earlier this year, he was a Marine in the Pacific in the next big battle after Iwo, Okinawa. man did those guy catch (heck) over on those islands. My Dad had me build a Corsair to honor the flying Marines for his war room years ago.

Your model looks great!
Have you read the book? The two books that guy wrote the other one Flyboys (not the movie of the same name) are some of the best books I have ever read. |
RE: Movie: Flags of our fathers

RE: Movie: Flags of our fathers
I was dissapointed that the "flyboys" movie has no relation to the book by the same name. Heck of a book, can't say I was comfortable at any time reading it. Another one they'll never make into a movie : Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking". Best wishes, Dave Olson |

[quote]ORIGINAL: Scar Red, do you think they'll ever make a movie from the James Bradley book "Flyboys"? I can't imagine a movie even coming close to the book. I'd go see it, but would not expect it to follow what Bradley wrote. Heck of a book, can't say I was comfortable at any time reading it. Dave Olson |
RE: Movie: Flags of our fathers
Flyboys is an excellent book. I agree with eugor, after reading that book the dropping of the nuclear bombs is easier to understand. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is easy to criticize now as we look back. Nobody in 1945 really understood the long term consequences of radiation poisoning, let alone genetic defects. All our leaders saw at the time was an early end to the war. My stepfather was in the 4th marine division during the war fighting in several major campaigns including Saipan. He was injured and recovering in San Diego when his unit hit the beaches on Iwo Jima. His entire company was lost. He has carried that guilt of not being killed his whole life. So, when we were faced with losing 1.5 million (estemated) soldiers invading the Japanese homeland or dropping a couple of new technology bombs, I think we made the correct decision. Not only have the Japanese carried the scars of the war all these years, so have the American GI's who the fought over there.

RE: Movie: Flags of our fathers
I saw Flags of Our Fathers today. It was good but nowhere near the film that Saving Private Ryan is.
As for the use of nuclear weapons, I don't have a problem with using such technology in times of war. It's the strategic bombing campaigns and targeting of civilians in general that is immoral. |

It's the strategic bombing campaigns and targeting of civilians in general that is immoral. The only thing Truman did right was using the atomic bombs. After that all our so called 'leaders' have cost this country dearly simply by losing in Korea, losing in Vietnam, and pantywaisting current actions. If you have the ability to annihilate the enemy then do so. Had Truman given MacArthur the go ahead for atomic weapons on the Yalu, demonstarting the US's resolve to stop such crap, then Vietnam would never have happened. This last 60 years of "did not, did too, did not, did too" baloney has done nothing but convince all that we have no guts to face strong opposition and will forever back down while pi$$ing away our resources except for those we GIVE to RED CHINA! You better get your RCing done now, 'cause you aint gonna' be doing it another 50 years. |

HF, it looks like you did't read either of the two books[&o]
Heck of a book, can't say I was comfortable at any time reading it. The biggest thing I came away from Fyboys with was an understanding of the hate that the older guys I worked with had for the Japanesse. It was very heavy reading and informative for me. Both books were excellent. |

The 50 years: Maybe this reply to another requested "thoughts" for a news guy says it. I submitted: >>> Have all you Socialists / Liberal people of the news media, the democratic party, and most of the Republican Party ever given thought to the consequences of your drive to make this country again the Kings and the Serfs? Can you not see that there will only be ONE KING and that is the China that you so willingly now bow to? China will never recognize YOUR nobility! Between big-business, their in-pocket federal government, and the socialist media, you will -- in the not too distant future -- hand over a fascist USA to China, the next world dictatorship. YOU and YOURS are placing YOUR grandchildren, along with mine, into a life of serfdom. <<<< vicman: HF, it looks like you did't read either of the two books I have several accounts from relatives that were THERE! 'Nuff said. |
