Default OMP Edge 540 40 sized control horn question

Help, I know I am slow here, but What am I supposed to do with this control horn? (Shown)

I see the hardwood as shown in the photo, but there is no cut out for the control horn.

Instructions are not real complete in this area, and I guess I am still learning as far as building (HA)

Any help would be appreciated.....I want to get the geometry right, but I am first strugling with the control horn, exactly where to mount it (depends on horn and linkage I guess)

How do I cut a square hole in the hard wood so I can epoxy or CA this in there?

And If I am using 2/56 Ball ends, this has to be in the right place.

Also, what sized servo arm wil give me the full throw for 3D?

Thanks for the help, loving the Edge 540 profile so far....Can't wait to fly it

Hi Tom,

Use an X-acto knife to cut a slot for the control horn and install into the aileron. Then wick thin CA around the joint and you are done. You will destroy the aileron before the horn will pull out. Also roughen up the carbon fiber horn sides a little with sandpaper before gluing in. Your pushrod should be at 90 degrees to the hinge line for proper geometry. Servo arn should be about 3/4 to 1 inch. If the distance from the pivot point of the pushrod to the hinge line of the aileron is the same as your servo arm then that is optimal and you can get full travel.

Also you want to use the furtherest holes out in both ends that will give you the travel you need. Using further in or shorter holes maximizes slop and leads to flutter. That's why the DuBro arms that are slightly longer are popular. I use them whenever possible and then use the most length I can get on the horns. Remember, further out minimizes any slop in the system.

Good Tip, I use those Dubro Large arms for JR....they are cheap, so I will make sure to keep that in mind, as far as the longest arms, furthest away from the hinge line, etc...

Keep in mind you can actually use servo arms that are too long. You want to use the same length horns that match the distance of the pivot hole in the control surface horn to that corresponding hinge line. Or in other words a 1:1 ratio. That way a 45 degree travel on your servo arm will equal a 45 degree deflection on your surface.

You mean where the stab slides into the fuselage slot? If you have a good fit there CA wicks in real nice. I used to use epoxy on most ARFs but have switched to thin CA on the OMP profiles. Works great and no mess.
