Default Parkzone's mosquito invasion!!!

If progress in the war continues as anticipated this beauty will become my very first big twin engine fighter bomber belly landing model. The "air scoops" will be carefully protected with music wire "skids." Yes, it has priority over a new Hurricane that must be on line before next fall's Battle of Britain commemorations that will be celebrated with three (3) Spitfires over my favorite war zones.

Out.

A neat thing about electric power is that it is easy to run the motors in opposite directions to prevent destabilizing forces. The stock ESCs used with the right props might allow the kind of vertical performance I need. If not, larger capacity ESC technology will be needed.

Breaking off the attack now. Returning to base.

Yes, I can't wait for mine either!

The Mosquito's awe-inspiring blend of speed, range and maneuverability allowed Allied aircrews to pull off some of the most daring raids of World War II. This detailed recreation of a de Havilland Mk VI variant comes with an authentic trim scheme and other details like engine exhausts, machine guns and cannon ports. Its two 370-size brushless motors are powered with a single 3S 2000–2200mAh 25C Li-Po pack (sold separately) and deliver all the performance the twin-motor fan needs for sport aerobatics or high-speed strafing runs.

PKZ6350 BNF Basic Price $249.99
PKZ6375 PNP Price $229.99

In case anyone missed it the above URL brings up information about our new "wooden wonder" that all RAF fans need to know about. Given the modifications I plan to perform on this dandy machine, if I had more "youthful eyes" the stock radio would be used. Although I still enjoy stock equipment very much (I am still enjoying the "after glow" of ringing out my belly landing F4U in the small field next to my house this afternoon, for example) I crave the ultimate safety and perfection of flight possible with the new AR635 receiver. So, I have reminded my FHS (favorite hobby shop) of my latest warplane needs.

Hopefully, the joy of vicariously enjoying the courage and heroism of the British people and their Noblemen fighter pilots in their FINEST HOUR of saving Western Civilization will have the kind of positive influence our present world desperately needs to rise to the occasion in our world's present darkest hour!

Rolling in to attack.

Out.

My beautiful new SHOCK and AWE MOSQUITO is ready for its maiden flight. She is set up as an effective belly lander as well as for ROG action. The "engine scoops" are modified by cutting them back and shaping them somewhat like the angled "radiator scoop" on the belly landing PZ P-51 GUNFIGHTER. I used clear plastic covers on the front of the scoops and reinforced the foam areas that can contact grass, etc. with 1/2 inch and 2 inch wide clear packing tape which should work very well for belly landing operations. Small wrinkles in the tape were ironed out leaving the tape almost invisible. Clear tape was also added to the fuselage area to protect the painted area where fingers and thumb are used for hand launching.

Thrust with stock props can just pull the 35 ounce (less battery) airframe straight up using the recommended battery. A smaller higher "C" battery can also power the ship straight up as well. I have ordered a number of different two and three bladed props to determine highest performance for use under different conditions. Now that good landings are a piece of cake with the revolutionary AR635 receiver adequate performance 3 bladed props are just too cool to not use on ROG operations.

Breaking off the attack now.

Out.

SHOCK AND AWE MOSQUITO lived up to this nick name beautifully today. I was honestly surprised at the power and performance on launch today as those "little" (?) motors generated much more thrust than expected. I had earlier tested storage charge voltage level batteries on the heavier airframe than what was used on this first flight and wasn't impressed with the power to weight ratio.

The final weight for flight with a small high "C" battery was 38.5 ounces (no landing gear, great belly landing). The flying performance was every bit as good as my belly landing F4U Corsair and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters. The landing without flaps was easily as slow or slower than anything I've ever flown. The only maneuver I had trouble with was knife edge flight that usually ended up with screaming dives. I need lots of practice and I plan to get a lot of it on the site next to my house.

Temperature was 31 degrees and there was almost no wind. The ungloved left launch hand got numb with cold after the flight. The excitement level was so great during the flight I didn't notice the cold.
No more flying under such intolerable conditions!

Out.

I maidened mine today as well and took off into a 10 mph wind. She climbed almost vertical and needed about 3 clicks of down trim to fly straight and level. No aileron or rudder trim needed. All I can say is OMG!! This plane is fantastic. I couldn't believe how easy it was to fly. She was up about 7 minutes and sliced through the wind like a knife at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I loved the way she looked with the wheels up. When I brought her down I realized I needed some power to keep her level on approach. I am really loving this plane. My buddy just got an FMS 1400 size Navy Japanese Zero and I can't wait to take my Mosquito up while he is flying his Zeek.

Mad Web, she's great isn't she?? I don't think she was made for knife edge though. She cuts such a gorgeous silhouette. I think this plane will become my favorite and I may buy a second as a spare.

Congratulations Chuck, and thanks for sharing! Yes, I also am very impressed with our hot new fighter bomber. I just finished testing 9X4.7 SF APC props and must recommend against too much full throttle with these props that can easily pull over thirty six amps, but these props might end up being my best all altitude props so long as I can remember to go easy on the throttle at low altitude. Careful testing shows that the 9X4.7 props pull only a few more amps than the perfectly adequate low altitude stock props. Yes, I could be tempted to buy a back up ship also, but given my increasingly limited hanger space I will probably take really good care of my present machine and make do with it. Since it will serve mainly as a "belly lander" I added carbon fiber to the leading edge of the wing in addition to all flying surface tips. Flaps installed with extra deflection angle of 55 mm should be fun for really slow landings.

You may be right about knife edge flight capabilities but I must continue to try until I am convinced it can't be done. By the way, have you noticed how the wings flex on high "G" maneuvers? I will try to be a bit more gentile with the controls in the future. Snapping a wing off could ruin my whole day.

Breaking off the attack now.

Out.

The screaming dives reported earlier as a result of knife edge flight attempts were the result of having (blush) the rudder set up backwards. After removing the rudder servo and reinstalling it backwards the high tech receiver was able to do its thing very nicely. Compliments of the balancing effects of the counter rotating props my light no landing gear Mosquito flies knife flight rather well. The beautiful stabilizing effects of the high tech receiver is no doubt also a helpful factor in the aerobatic capability of this piece of historic flying art.

The clear tape "flaps" used in front of the battery hatch cover extending over the front edge of the cover, and the aft area of the hatch to protect the hatch latch deflects any belly landing unnecessary roughness nicely. The tape is folded over on itself such that the hatch is not affected by the tape's adhesive and the cover is easily removed and replaced as needed. Watch out about the rudder when changing a battery on the field. I just might have to rig up a simple "dolly" for those days when more than one battery is going to be used.

The inevitable culture war victory by the good guys is being won in part by the heroic excitement that only historic fighter planes can inspire. Please check out the Messerschmitt thread for breaking details. TALLY-HO!

TALLY-HO!!!

The third flight today turned out to be a charm over my small backyard flying sight flying vertical rolls, knife edge flight, etc., The first two flights required me to get the measure of situations while costing me two broken props and a nose repair job using carbon fiber tow material on the inside of the battery compartment to reinforce that area against possible future ground impacts.

Flap deflection angles of 24 mm was found to provide smooth landing flight characteristics. Though 55 mm worked well even with some wind the last time out to the large soccer fields, today pilot induced oscillation (PIO) had me stalling at the last instant and plowing into the ground. The second flight disaster was actually due to using a very weak battery and having very little margin of safety on an emergency landing. In the future suspect batteries will be tested or at least I will consider myself duly warned if there is a significant loss of performance during the vertical climb and roll shortly after launch.

Rolling in to attack now.

Out.

TEN OUT OF TEN WITH NO LOSSES!

Last weekend's mission over the small war zone within walking distance of my house included a new modeling prospect who along with other neighborhood kids was so impressed with fighter plane maneuvering of the Mosquito during my sorties that he awarded my flying performance with ten out of ten points. His evaluation was entirely on his own and was so touching I just had to share it. He was treated with my usual recommendations about how to become a model fighter pilot by using a flight sim and graduating to lighter, slower, more cost effective park flyers first before daring to fly larger more capable and challenging aircraft.

I can't resist practicing knife edge flight a lot with this plane since it is not supposed to be able to perform such a maneuver according to an earlier post here. I will continue to give credit to the high tech receiver unless someone informs us that this new technology is not really that necessary. After honoring a request to see how high the plane would fly I chopped the throttle and performed a dive bombing and strafing attack on our position. This was followed by the usual combat maneuvers and running commentary of how fighter tactics were used to secure victory in the sky.

The culture war is progressing nicely so, ". . . At 'em boys, give 'er the gun!"

Out.

VICTORY ROLL!

Having gotten used to using my older and in most cases lighter batteries it was especially delightful to enjoy the spirited performance of a newly "broken in" 30C 22,000mAh battery. It all started with the second roll while flying straight up just after launch. Evidently, the mild wind turbulence blew the first roll off course. Intuitively, corrections were made to the flight path and it seemed effortless to then fly a beautiful roll on its straight up path. Yes, usually my rolls are not quite so nice. This airplane is about to become an addiction so I must discipline myself to fly some of my other machines lest I become even less balanced than I already am.

There are still some things that must be accomplished and tests that must be made so we can have some more fun things to write about.

So, until then AIM HIGH, FLY, FIGHT, WIN!

VERY NICE FOUR POINT ROLLS

In all of the excitement four point rolls were left out of all previous sorties until the first day of Spring that featured everything including a very bad landing that broke a prop, bent a prop shaft, and damaged the nose again. I need more practice landing in my small space near my house. The grass area I was aiming for is four feet higher than the paved area and like one of my GUNFIGHTER's last landings that ended on the paved area, the Mosquito slammed into the bank instead of greasing in on the grassy area as I had planned.

I have to attribute the quality of the four point rolls to the high tech receiver as my rudder skills are quite poor. From now on four point rolls will always be included on all serious future missions. They are just too much fun to leave out.

[IMG]file:///C:/Users/Richard/Pictures/importD13[1].gif[/IMG]

Despite heroic flying efforts my Mosquito lost its most recent deadly encounter in the air. Disaster struck as the ship was attempting a belly landing on the small combat zone near my house. As she was on a landing approach flying in some turbulent air with a little over half flaps deflected an unseen power line snagged a wing that knocked the plane right out of the sky.

From a distance the now repaired airplane looks okay. How well she will still fly remains to be seen. SitReps (Situation Reports) will be fourth coming.

IT WILL BE NICE WHEN MY PICTURES AND ANIMATIONS STAY POSTED! The little squares with "X" in them were fighter plane pictures and my favorite Spitfire animations. Vested interests in the "science status quo" are suspects in these hacker attacks that are not going to stop the unstoppable march of progress!

RANDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY!!!

This latest CAP mission now concludes all but minor testing/adjusting experiments regarding power systems with my Park Flyer fighter force. Beautiful APC SF 9 X 4.7 tractor and pusher props on the Mosquito performed perfectly at over 5800 feet density altitude near the western side of the Continental divide beside a very nice belly landing area along Highway 2 yesterday. Maximum motors' current before launch was 33 Amps which is very close to sea level value with the 9 X 4.7 props. RPMs were less than 1K above that experienced at sea level and the damaged motor from a previous crash was less than 100 RPM's lower than the undamaged one. The very stable yet very high aerobatic performance of this airplane makes it really fun to fly. The now "just fly at any altitude automatic variable pitch props" represents the crowning glory of our RANDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY!!!

I now have total confidence in the ability to fly spectacular air shows anywhere in the "good ole US of A" (Yes, I still have unfailing faith in the future of this, the greatest country to ever bless mankind - we do still have some victories to win - ACE FIGHTER PILOTS ARE UP TO THE CHALLENGE!!!)

Rolling in to attack!

Out!

THANK YOU FELLOW VETERANS FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE AND FOR WHAT MANY OF YOU ARE STILL DOING!

It seems appropriate to use this thread to thank veterans on this post because of the flying "milestone" accomplishment indicated in my last post. I just wish that the Spitfire animation "escort fighters" would stay posted. At the moment all that now shows up on my PC are those little squares with an "X" in them. My war with anti-science hackers continues. I hope the above MEMORIAL DAY picture will stay posted here.

The Mosquito flew virtually the same down here on the deck as it did above one mile high density altitude as reported in the last post. This most recent flight was the very first to fly at low altitude since the disaster and repairs reported earlier. My wife wishes we could have gotten a video of its high altitude flight with the snow covered mountains in the background. Once I procure all the fighters needed to win the war, at some point a quality video camera will become a useful part of logistics operations.

Breaking off the attack now and returning to base.

Out.

Unhappy fixed gear mount for Mosquito

Hey! Fellows isn't this mosquito the greatest plane. Well I really like it. I need help from someone out there in mosquito land. I have mine set up with fixed landing gear, and made a hard landing in the grass off our runway and broke the plastic landing gear mount in the wing. I need to replace one. If any of you have installed retracts in your wings, you have to take the fixed mounts out of the wing. I would like to buy you spare fixed gear mounts or mount whichever. Thanks
Please e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks again

TALLY-HO rfmillte,

Yes, this is a really neat plane. I replaced a damaged motor with one that tacked at a slightly higher RPM. This evidently created a yawing problem that I attempted to trim out with a combination of added wing tip weight opposite the yawing direction, and approximately three (3) degrees motor out offset of the motor on the wing opposite the direction of the yawing phenomena. After a few test flights I seem to be closing in on a comfortable airplane trim condition.

Hope you can get the part you need. It can be ordered from HH using information in the instruction book. I order my parts through my favorite hobby shop.

Will keep everybody updated on trim and performance mission information.

OUT.

Today's invasion fighter sweeps were flown over my small back yard ground cluttered war zone in turbulent 90 degree plus air conditions. Vertical performance, though adequate, was off as was the precision of knife edge flight and the four point rolls I was practicing in the gusty conditions. I did get brave and enjoyed a greater than instruction book recommended flap deflection angles landing on the last landing of the day. Spectator/modeling enthusiasts commented on the smoothness of the landing into the wind.

After the flying session an interesting thing happened. I learned that my wife looked up from her yard work to observe an over head airplane and after a few seconds it dawned on her that it was my Mossie. How about that for realism?

Making my way back across the channel.

Out.

Double Trouble? Anyone heard of losing a motor on one of these birds? My brother has this plane and it crashed yesterday from what I believe was a temporary loss of power to the left motor. We had just repaired the left wing from a previous mishap. I noticed when it initialized (plugging in the batt) that only the right motor ticked over. I then checked all connections on the wing/motor/esc in question.
He's still pretty new to ailerons so I flew it around to make sure it was all trimmed up after the repairs. At one point, coming out of a turn, the left wing dipped and the plane yawed hard left. I recovered, flew it around and it seemed okay. After handing it over to my brother he flew for a couple minutes and it did the same thing. Only he couldn't recover and it spiraled straight down into a tree.
It is still lodged in there about 60 feet up. We pumped the throttle to try and get her loose and the left motor is intermittent. Anyone seen or heard of this on the 'squito?

gunnut, sorry about the downed fighter. Having experienced a similar incident with a single "engine" machine, the problem turned out to be a loose electrical connection; but only a forced landing resulted.

Unlike full scale and some modeling applications that use some engine offset out from center our Mosquitos are set up straight. My ship ended up with a little "in offset" on my right motor to trim out the effects of the greater thrust in the newly installed motor. A possible trim adjustment that might help minimize loss of power spin disasters with our planes would be to shim the motors with some out side thrust. Ideally, in the event of lost power on one side of the plane instantly applying opposite rudder will keep the plane flying straight when properly trimmed.

Breaking off the attack now - if the above picture I posted here shows up you might want to considering bailing out given the dangerous unpredictably of an engine fire.

Out.

WEATHER RELATED CRASH DAMAGE (Click picture to bring up a lot of neat stiff.)

A number of our recent missions were scrubbed due to bad weather conditions. Finally, the weather cleared on a dark cloudy evening that ended nicely compliments of experience with the flight characteristics of the plane in various maneuvers. This prior experience made it possible to correctly sense it's orientation without actually visually being able to see enough detail to accurately determine aircraft orientation. Near the end of the flight rain started up again so I cut the flight short and landed normally. At this point I was very pleased with the Mossie's performance and my adequate experience to maneuver the plane fairly accurately under poor lighting conditions. I will confess that the experience made me nervous, but delighted that controlled flight was possible under such vision limiting conditions.

Later the damage to the Mosquito was caused when the "carrier" behaved unexpectedly and caused logistics equipment to crash into the plane. The damage has been repaired and the ship still functions perfectly as a "stand off scale flying fighter bomber." Ordinary modeling prospects are as favorably impressed with this historic piece of flying art as I am in spite of all the battle damage that can be easily seen from close up. From a distance, especially when it is in the air, surface damage is not a factor to be concerned about.

So, AIM HIGH, FLY, FIGHT, WIN!

Out.

FANTASTIC WORK!!!

I just put up a fair performance flight with my model Mossie at just under ten thousand (10,000) feet density altitude over Rocky Mountain State Park. SitRep to be made after my latest mission.is accomplished.
