Default What to I do with a speed 280 and 5:1 gear drive?

I bought and flew a Simprop/Great Planes Albatros using a Speed 280, 5:1 gear drive and a 10 x 4.7 APC slowflier prop. The plane leaped off the ground, climbed up to 4 feet and would go no higher.

After a trip to the LHS (and their advice), I bought a speed 300, better gear drive and a 9 x 6 APC prop to fix the Albatros flight problems.

I'm now stuck with the 280 and old drive.

I'm looking for your opinions on what to put it in. Most slowfliers already include the motor and gear drive. I am not particular about a foamie ARF or building from sticks or scratch. I'm just looking to build a happy home for them - something that will 'work'.

LHS only had kits with motors.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Chris

What brand of gearbox is it? There is a motor available that has the power of a speed 300 but fits in press-fit speed 280 gearboxes. Most people use the MPJet 5:1 gearbox with this motor and a APC 9x6 e-prop.
See the motor here:

Good question. It is the green one that Great Planes packages with the 'Eco-drive 300' that also included the Graupner Speed 280 and the 10 x 4.7 prop. It looks most similar to the Horst drives shown in the Hobby Lobby catalog (the $10 cheapies).

Try on of those motors at the site above. Run it on 7x720 NiMH with a 9x6 APC e-prop. Great setup for anything less that 14oz and more that 200sq.in. of wing.

Since I already have a 280 motor, perhaps I'll scratch-build something along the lines of the Slim Gym (www.nesail.com/slimgym.htm). It is a 41 inch wingspan, 317 sq. in. monoplane. At worst, I'm out the cost of a roll of covering and an arrowshaft.

I have found that these motors have the same input capacity as a speed 300 but they fit in a 280 gearbox. If you use the above set-up you could get 12oz of thrust. Or build a largish slow flyer for the original motor.

Hmmmm.... wish I knew about that motor before I spent 15 times the price for the graupner Speed 300 unit at my LHS. Perhaps I'll work on a Predator UAV model (see March 2002 Model Airplane News). It has glider-like proportions.... and I test software for controlling the real one.

Chris, if you want to scratch build something, check out my Pietenpol Aircamper plans I have downloadable from my website.

You can use your speed 280 and gearbox, and the AUW is about 14 oz. Its also scale. If flys very slowly, will ROG, and builds pretty fast.
