Default Flyzone Cessna skylane

Just got this little bird, and its the best thing ever, Ive flown for a while and wanted something with a little power, but relaxing to fly and this is it.I got a nice discount because I was the first to fly one out of my lhs and now he wants to carry them.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering how good it was. Keep us updated on your flights. What else have you flown that you are comparing this plane to?

Ive flown the art-tech 182, skyfly, countless hobbyzone pusheres and the super cub, oh and my typhoon, I flew on sunday, and i know i wanst supposed too, i think there were 15-20 mph winds, and by the end of my second batt, it was snowing, but all worth it. The main thing Ive noticed is it definetly wont glide forever like other cessnas, and this one comes in hot, be sure to land in a headwind with plenty of space

Thank you for your post. I am suprised that not many people have experiences with this one. Can this plane come in a 1/4 throttle for landing? DP

i dont know why people havent flown this much either, its really a good plane, as for landing, I found with plenty of space you can come in at abot 1/6 throttle and it will slowly come down

Thats a nice little cessna, my favorite plane ever. I have been flying the world model's Cessna Skylane TC and i bet thay fly very much the same. Does smooth and sort of fast, nice wheel landings and a great stall turn sound like yours? Cool plane thank's for show'n it.

Yes it is a little fast for it's size, but rears up nice on the main gear and roles on them for a bit before comeing down on the nose.Dont you love the flyby??

I bought the Cessna 182 and promptly broke the plastic retainers that hold the nose wheel while taxing from pavement up to some grass. The flimsy 1/16" thick plastic retainers are hardly a good choice for holding something that is bound to take some rough punishment and hard knocks from time to time.

I replaced them with nylon straps which are much stronger but on about the 4th flight, while coming in a bit too hot, the plane did a hop and nosed in with a busted prop and bent motor shaft.

I was able to straighten the motor shaft and replace the prop but I decided I wanted to swap out the motor for a brushless 370 which also meant replacing the battery with a lighter weight Li-Po. After getting the bird refitted and balanced out again with a 7x5 prop I found the new combination to be a bit too fast for my comfort.

So my question is what would be a good prop size to slow this bird down and give me a bit more stability. At half throttle or thereabouts, this combination is still moving the plane way faster than I would like. I am sure that an 8" prop will still give enough ground clearance. I don't know too much about how prop size and pitch affects flight characteristics but I am thinking I need less bite with this motor so a longer prop with less pitch might give me the characteristics I'm looking for.

I would love to hear from someone who is knowledgeable in this subject or has experimented with different prop sizes on this plane.

Try an 9x4.7 prop. It'll slow it down a bit and give a tad more torque.

I don't think I have enough clearance for a 9. I know I can fit an 8 on it with no problem. Doesn't reducing the pitch decrease speed? I think I should have plenty of torque. I don't know much about what the numbers translate to regarding performance. For instance when I go from a 7x5 to say an 8x3. How much does the pitch effect the speed? Is it prop length or pitch that affects it the most?

Maybe I should be asking if there are some good reference articles I can read up on to learn more about prop selection.

Ultimately, I will end up going back to the hobby shop and get a few different selections to try, but I would hate to make the situation even worse due to my lack of proper knowledge not to mention the 44 round trip miles to the hobby shop.

Ahhhh, I just discovered the Advanced settings on my RealFlight G3 simulator! It appears that an 8x2 prop will slow me down considerably and still handle takeoff easily. Of course the tradeoff is that I have to keep the motor running at a higher RPM to maintain altitude, hence a shorter battery life but I can always reprop as my skills improve.

I am really impressed by how closely the G3 plane matches up to the real one. The simulator performs very nearly the same as the actual model from my limited experience with it. It gives me comfort to have some idea of what to expect before I actually take to the air.

I just purchased the Cessna from my LHS, but I have to wait for it to come in as it was a special order item. I should receive it this weekend and I have Monday off, so if wind is nice, I may get to spend some time "practicing" with this plane. However, this will be my first and I plan to take it very easy the first time out.

This was recommended to me by another LHS as a good plane and they had one, but I wasn't able to transport it from visiting my family due to luggage restraints... so now I'm in the eternall wait... and wouldn't you know it, the last two days have had beautiful afternoons with NO wind! Arrg!

awesome, i just got a parkflyers 7x4, same size as the stock, but more pitch on the blades, im hoping to get a little more speed and torque from it. weather looks decent for tomorrow so we'll see what happens

also, good luck with this bird its a really nice plane once its up, ROG are easy but landing it comes in fats, on my first flights i landed in the grass and kept the nose pitched up.

I am hanging up my pistol grip radio and racing for flying again I haven't flown in 10 years or so. I ordered the Flyzone Cessna I was wondering about the radio system. Is the speed controller separate from the receiver ?or are the integrated? How well does it function ? Any info would be helpful This looks like a real fun plane to fly and you can't beat the price. One last thing .Can you get extra receivers and servos for it.

The Cessna comes with an external ESC which powers the brushed motor. I would recommend you replace the flimsy plastic straps which hold the front tricycle gear in place. I cut up a nylon tie wrap and drilled a couple holes to make a set of heavy duty straps that replaced the plastic ones.

There are 3 servos, one in the wing and two in the fuse. The plane lands pretty hot so be prepared. It was fun to fly before I tinkered with it and changed the motor to a brushless. A bad solder joint (my fault) caused radio interference which wasn't pretty to watch as the plane went from full left aileron to full right aileron and then locked there. The result was a bashed in fuse and busted wing and broken motor shaft (ouch!).

Have fun flying! It should be great little plane.

My cessna 182 by flyzone was flown successfully three times without modification before I did some work on it. I feel like this little bird needs more power in order to imitate the flying characteristics of the real Cessna 182 . My wattmeter reads 95 watts at full throttle and the plane with the 7cell- battery inside weights about 1.25 pound. 95/1.25 = 76 Watts per Pound is just enough for this plane to cruise in the sky, but I thought any number above 100 W/ Ib would be better. My goal is to hit 120 watts /pound based on my experience with this plane, so I did the following mods:

Motor : Himax 2025 4200 KV
Gearboxe: Himax 6.2 (4.2:1)
Propeller: APC 9x6 or GWS 9x7 EP
ESC: CC phoenix 25
Battery: Thunder power 3cell- 2100mah 15C

After installing the new powerplant, the plane weights 1.35 pound with the lipo battery. My meter reads 165 watts at full throttle and 74 watts at half throttle. That means 165/1.35 = 122 watts per pound at full blast. The modified cessna 182 can cruise at half throttle compared to full throttle as it was before. The power output of the Himax brushless motor at half throttle is the same as the stock brushed 380 motor at full throttle, but the himax is still more efficient and powerful. This set up gives this little bird a new life. Ground take off is awsome and it flies great

In addition, I converted the plane into a tail dragger because the stock nose wheel is very flimsy. The plastic retainer keeps breaking off even on a smooth landing.
