How to make the gp rv-4 a little better
Hello, I recieved my gp rv-4 for christmas, and built it over the winter. I have now put on dozens of flights, and is now my favorite plane to fly. The only problem is, the wing. It holds up well, and works for regular flying, but I wanted something more. Instead of the skimpy little ailerons, I wanted bigger ones, along with beefing up the wing, and make it look good. I have come up with this:
- Instead of the 1/32" center sheeting, it will be 1/16" sheeting
- Use 1/32 sheeting for the leading edge
Use 1/16" balsa for the trailing edge, instead of the pinch and crack 1/32" balsa
- hefty 1/8" thick, 2" wide ailerons, instead of the 1/16" thick 7/8" wide ailerons
- Put in 2 extra shear webs
- NO DIHEADRAL
All in all, it costed me $25.00 in balsa from hobby lobby, and the wood is very nice, no warping. I haven't calculated the weight yet, but I'm guessing it will be an ounce or so more, but plenty worth it for what it will do. I did get the rv-4 to snap roll with the stock wing pretty well though, but even on high throws, It couldn't do a roll very well. I know what many of you are thinking, if he was going to go through the trouble of making a new wing, why wouldn't he put dual servos in it? Well, I just didn't feel like it, and didn't feel like spending an extra $25 for a servo and y harness. I'll keep you updated on when It is all together and when I fly it. Thanks, Joe.

RE: How to make the gp rv-4 a little better
After many hours, I got the wing finished, except for installing the servo and aileron linkage, and covering it, which I will do today. I think it turned out great, and weighs 1/2 to 3/4 of an ounce more than the other wing, very nice. You can tell easily from the second pic how much larger and neccessary the ailerons are in the new wing. the dihedral came out to be about .75". The stock wing has 2.5" dihedral. The wing tips also came out awsome, and much easier than the original wing called for. Thanks, Joe

That loooks great. you really can tell the dihedral difference in the two wings. Let us know how she flies.

Heres the wing all finished. I did get one good flight out of it, and it is great. The throws looked very tame, but I was able to do quite quick rolls, nothing the original wing could of ever done. It also made it snap roll a lot better, and an overall more satisfactory and fun plane. Thanks, Joe
