5.5 gram wing loader
After seeing some of these indoor coaxial spinning ultra light models, at 50-60 grams AUW, I have got a new challenge on my hands, to build it as light as possible with the standard micro motor as I can't get a hand on one of those in this country. Bugger!
Few of my recent mini Bi-planes I have built were much too heavy for what I had in mind, actually bit of the handle, but a good lesson to keep the weight to minimum for "slow-low and close" outdoor flying fun. Much better success with few mono wing ones, I have paid more attention to minimize the AUW, but still too heavy at some 8.5 grams w/load for my liking. The latest I just finished as another experiment and a great lesson curve, I have managed to reduce the wing load to 5.5grams per decimeter square, with an https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...978be6176b.jpg Few of my recent mini Depron creations , starting with too heavy Bi-planes. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...988468e7ae.jpg Better success with these mono wing 3mm Depron builds. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e54e793377.jpg Nice but still bit too heavy. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...126877cd3f.jpg At to 220g AUW it comes to 8.5g/dm2 wing load, still too heavy. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...a83292dac6.jpg My new project keeping it lighter. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...94e51f657a.jpg Hoping to keep it under 150 grams. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...68f4138ed8.jpg Touch of colour to add on some weight, LOL. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...894fc8a639.jpg Modification of few props while static test runs. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...c20165696d.jpg 6mm Depron cut out wheels. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...9fb83f9176.jpg Just about ready. AUW at 150 grams which was my target or bellow. This model gave me a good idea to reduce the weight even further so my next target is 120 or bellow. |
Took it out for couple of test runs, unfortunalely too breezy to get a real picture.

Still didn't get a chance to fly it in dead calm, but in light breeze I have found it slightly Ail. unstable so decided to spread its wings, LOL.

Took it out again in just about dead calm, during twilight, test running GWS 8x4 prop, pretty nice, used only some 80mA out of the 300 packs in 3 min. flights.

I have never expected to have so much joy flying this model; even captured a shooting star while flying this eve. LOL.

Latest twilight fun.

At 5.5 grams/dm it came too heavy to my expectation, despite being a nice flier, so scrapping it out and replacing the full frame with larger, lighter new design, on its way.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...8d6e2d65c0.jpg New frame replacement for the internal set up. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e1f2c50e85.jpg Wing load reduction with the new frame design. |
After further check my new flying surface area will be 37dm, 12dm larger than replacemet so the wing load will be reduced from 5.5 to ~3.6, making it much slower, as my main target for slow-low and close.

Officially de-commissioned, stripped down and in the trash bin, 'finito-basta'! LOL.
