Cheap way to make a gws direct drive 300
 

I have a gws 300c gearbox motor and i have converted it to direct drive(more speed)
First get:
1.Gws 300 W/gearbox
2.APC 7X6 Prop
3.Pliers
4.A plane which you can put the motor mount in the bottom of plane(such as a GWS spitfire)
5.Thick, Strong glue

1.First remove the 2 screws holding the motor in
2.Then Take the gear drive off of the gearbox using pliers
3.Then Glue the motor back in the gearbox.(cannot screw it in because it will block the prop and knock it off)
4.Put the GWS Motor Mount it the lower hole of the plane(glue in place)
5.Press the gearbox partially onto the mount to where the gear is still showing.
6.Mark the lengh you pressed the motor in and remove.
7.Put some glue on the inside of the box and press to the mark
8.Let dry and then press the APC prop on.*

*It seems that the prop would come off but it will hold wonderfully!

Still not convinced? Glue it on!

Post any comments on this. PS It also works on all gws gearbox motors! Good for that slow tiger moth upgrade!

If you're looking for comments, I personally don't like the idea of gluing in a motor into the gearbox. The cheap brushed motors don't last that long and if you can't get the motor out of the box, that adds another few bucks to the repair.

The idea is a good one for people looking for a direct drive solution though and don't care about the potential extra cost. I might look into a different means of securing it though. Would it be possible to drill a couple of small holes into the motor and screwing it in through the top of the gearbox? Or what about one of these:

Could you friction fit it using plumbers teflon tape or small bits of tape?

Hey all,

I has looking at my 300 gearbox and with the Screws in the motor and the use of a 5.00 prop adapter the one that is used with the APC props I have plenty of clearance. So instead of gluing in the motor and passably having to spend 1.25+shipping for a new gearbox when a crash or burnt motor happens you just spend 5.00 on the adapter and your all set

I decided that a resonable way to not have to buy anything is to block the motor from coming out the back. its easy and inexspnsive

BTW nobody worries about 2-3$ on a gearbox. Besides you can destroy it twice before you would have as much in it as an adaptor. I seriously dont think anyone is that ad of a pilot :)
