Slow stick Forum!!
 

OK, i just ordered a slow stick with the gws floats. That should be here by friday. I've seen some sick slow sticks out there but i want this one to be super light, and fly verrrrrry slow. I wana see some of your slow sticks and what you did such as mods or upgrades. I fly 3D but want this plane to scoot around in my front yard.(i have a bayou thats right infront of my house for float flying!!)
Ok, here's what i think i might do.

O.K. how does this look? The motor is super light and can lift this bird into the air fine. I don't need loads of power but would like to have as much as possible. I went with the flight power packs because there light, have a cheap balancer that i can hook up to my triton to fast balance/charge them, and there semi cheap. I think i'd only use that small battery to fly it with the floats. It may not even be necisarry but you never know. I want this thing to be really light. Doing so will make it unable to fly in almost any wind.... Doesn't that suck when you live on the water and its almost always windy!?!?!? Anyway, later i think i'll buy another wing and string that up with lights that i can run together and plug into the reciever.
Isn't it funny that the damn esc weighs more that the freegin reciever?!?!? whats up with that?? lolz.

In my humble opinion, your gear is overkill. A Ferrari engine in a Chevette so to say. You can get equally light and dependable gear for a quarter of the price of the stuff you listed. What you've listed will work just fine though.

Right....my thoughts too..... What motor would you stick on this thing?? If i put this stuff on and it weighs 16 oz, thats a little less that 100w per pound. Thats good but i don't need that much.

With a 3s2000mah battery. Plenty of power to go but, still has the slow fly characteristics.

Laggard, guys - all nice motors, diffrent strokes for different folks etc. I personally totally use either of the E-Max motors in ALL my planes, they've never let me down and in the UK are the chepest but best for the price, I also like the backplate mount having 4 screw holes instead of the 3 on TowerPro type mounts. I even use them in my EZ*'s and Modded Strykers. Long live the Slow Stick:D:)
Tip for today: Having trouble mounin your battery to fuse? Take an old Cell phone and take the plastic back off, put a couple of holes in it and use cable ties to fix to use - gives a nice flat base to mount a lipo to and slides to adjust the CoG.

Thanx guys for the input. I think i'm gana stick with the setup i got going. I may end up getting 2 of the 2cell lipos and wiring them in parrallel to give me some serious flight time if i need it. I think 30min is plenty so the 2100 will do the trick. I have a predator 3cell 2250 here allready but i think its too heavy and will make too much power. I know, there isn't ever too much power but on a light plane like this....i think there is. The wing loading has to be real light if i wana cruise around the yard and fly in my school gym.... :D

ah, ya, I made the mistake of gettin a (heavy, but POWERFUL) 2250 MAH lipo, zippy kind, gobs of pwr at a heavy price tag[:o], prob good for wind, am def consderin more like a 1250 for general, both in a 2s and a 3s [8D]

Luv2 - you've got the right idea about the lipo, I used a 2200 3S a while ago, it was fine for high winds cos you could "punch" you're way through the gusts and it flew for 25 minutes (15C). That was fine, but I changed to 1300 3S and got better flights cos the plane turned better and climbed easily. Even my 1700 2S is brilliant at the same weight as the 3S.
The tail: mine is stock but with cut-outs so that the elevator on full up-travel doesn't touch the rudder, which also has about 1/2in. cut-out near the bottom - n chance of the two touching.
My elevator servo is mounted at the rear so that the control rod is only 6in., this makes the control instant with no flexing of the cable. Weight-wise: its only a 9grm servo (Towerpro) so it doesn't affect the CoG too much and is easily rectified. Here are some piccy, don't know if they show the servo clearly. Note the folding prop and the cell-phonebattery holder.....

Ok. Got it in today. Right on time. Sooo. First impressions were great. I've had many arf's sent through the mail and this one was flawless. Had it UPSed in 2 day air. The box was undamaged. I also bought some GWS floats with it! they look flawless to! :D
So, i opened it up, set everything out, and read the manual 4 or 5 times. The manual is a bit unclear but haveing many many arf's under my belt, along with some kits and foamys, this looks like a piece of cake.
After reading the manual, i decided i'd edit the first step. Take a look. I used 3M blenderm for the hinges. Had that laying around. I think it'll stick better and overall last longer. Especially since i plan to fly on water! [8D]

Ok. Here are a few pics. Which of these did you use? Sticky tape or the gusset bolt mount?
Here's my rimfire motor i have. May thow that on there. It's an outrunner with a propsaver built in on the frount and a shaft at the back. Has a tripod style mount.... hmmm how to mount it on the slow stick...... :eek:

Thanx man. Will do soon. But there is kind of a problem.... kinda. I was talking to my electric friend at my field. He's an electric genius. If you went to the DOD or down on the deck in houston last year, you saw his lr-1 electric hit 243mph! he's good! lolz, anyway, I was talking to him about my motor choice and he said that will do it just fine.....but..... if you wanted to haul something(which i might just haul a drop box....real light) or if you wanted better flight time, i need to go with a bigger motor. Now, don't get me wrong, i thought it was crazy to before he explaned it to me. With this http://www.atlantahobby.com/shopexd.asp?id=5164 I could get the amps down REALLY low. Just by putting a smaller prop and a 11.1 volt battery. I though getting a small motor with only 2 cells would drop the amp draw....***?? lol, anyway, that really doesn't matter. Proping is the key here. All i have to do is prop this thing, get it on a watt meter and find out how many watts, volts, amps, etc. on this and i'm ready!
I'm going to go with the 11.1 to get longer flight times. This spreads the load out and draws less amps. I may do exactly what he told me to do also.... Put all the gear on(that bigger motor too), weigh it. See how many oz i have to spare...then load it up! lolz.

Luv2 - your frind is right in a way, there's nothing wrong with that motor and its rated at 160W, you can get away with 120 to 160W to get great performance. He's right about the prop, the Kv is 1080Kv so you want a largish prop (9/10 x 4/5) to give the required thrust. That Himax (good motors) is at the top end of the performance table and is a bit pricey. I run the cheaper E-max equivalent 2822 1000Kv that swings a 10 x 5 APC prop or a folding prop (unbreakable!!). The choice is yours. Also if funds allow get a Wattmeter that will give you all the nitty gritty. Oh, the beauty of my motor and the TowerPro type is thaat if anything happens and you need to change at the flying field it can be done in 30 seconds (2 Allen screws).
